I was on ebay today trying to find if any of the 2009 Exquisite Cards had slipped through, and I found this auction that gave me quite a chuckle. My favorite part is the subtitle.

Ebay Pisses Me Off Sometimes
Ebay can be the best place in the world, but it can also be a scam ridden cesspool, teeming with horrible and stupid people. When I got my virtual MEBAS (Masters of Ebay Buying and Selling) after spending years of working within the system, I have a list of grievences that I need to air per my pre-Festivus party planning list.
First, if you buy an item, you better be ready to pay for it then, not seven to ten days later. I know that eBay policies lay out their feelings on it, but paypal has changed the game. Fifteen years ago, it was done all through the mail, so I can understand any issues they needed to institute policies for. However, now, with most sellers ONLY taking paypal or similar services, there needs to be a common courtesy statute. I don’t want to hear about any money problems a buyer has, because that’s a 'your problem' not a 'my problem.' Pay as soon as you possibly can click the mouse over to paypal because I hate waiting when they knew the bill was coming. If you didn’t have the money you shouldn’t have bought, plain and simple.
Second, I hate people that don’t check their emails. This kind of relates to the above, because I have gotten the "I didn’t pay because I didn’t know" excuse way too many times. This also relates to item questions and BIN offers, especially when your iPhone gives you instant email updates. If I send a question, I expect a response ASAP, at least within that first 24 hours. That gives ample time for you to find out the answer and send it my way. Waiting until two minutes before the auction ends is complete poop. With BIN offers, I understand that you want to gauge interest in offers, but don’t let me sit there waiting. In fact, I avoid BIN/BO items with multiple expired offers.
That brings me to the next thing, BIN offers themselves. Ebay gives sellers the opportunity to counter offer, so they need to fucking use it. If I give you a reasonable offer, I think it is well within your role as a seller to counter if you do not think it is enough. If I am lowballing (which I have given up on), then I understand. But don’t reject my market value offer because you are a douche with no understanding of the BIN system. Don’t put your item up if you arent going to sell.
Speaking of selling but not selling, I have said before that using ebay as your personal photobucket is stupid and a complete waste of my fucking time. If you arent going to sell your item, go post a mailday message on a board or something. I don’t need to waste my time sending offers your way if you arent going to sell. Yes, yes, I know that there are success stories of people putting ridiculous BINs and getting a sale from a crazy person, but that is the exception to the rule. Stop with the show offs and get back to your regularly scheduled auctions.
Also, please do not send me a list of demands with your lowball BIN offer. I am not going to ship to Taiwan when it EXPLICITLY says otherwise in my auctions, and I am not going to waive shipping because you are begging me to help you. Ill deny you every single time just for being a thorn in my side.
Lastly, I hate shitty photos. If you have a card for sale, give me a good pic or I am going to bid lower. It is your responsibility to provide an accurate description of the item, not just a blurry cell phone shot. Spend the extra two minutes to get out your scanner or digital camera, and I will reward you as a buyer. God that pisses me off when I see something I want with a shitty ass photo.
Now, who has a good festivus pole that I can put a best offer on?

A Comment On eBay's New Auction Layout
Over the last few months, eBay has been playing around with their auction pages, something that has made a lot of people angry. The exception to this was, up until about a week ago, you had the choice of using the old style page or the new one. As far as I can tell, from this point forward, we are not going to have that choice, which is both very good and bad at the same time.
One of the biggest eBay auction page gripes of the last five years has been the timer, or really, lack there of. Although the clock counted down, it didnt do it in real time. This meant either having to set a snipe to win something in the last moments, or being very clever with page reloads and multiple windows. Considering that Java technology was more than equipped to handle a real time countdown with 1 click bidding, many eBayers were consistently shafted with inferior tech. Now, thank the lord, that has all changed, as one click bidding WITH a real time counter is now available. I cant tell you how happy this makes me, especially with my paranoia over giving my eBay info to a sniper service.

Bidding On Ebay: Dont Get Eaten Alive
Since eBay is the lifeblood of many of us for singles that we want to purchase, I want to discuss bidding practices for possibly getting the card you want, at the price you want it. I know for me, I have personal policies that I only break under very particular circumstances, and I am hoping that this discussion can help some people out, or at least prevent stupid bids from happening to my card.
First, the question of bidding late versus bidding early always presents itself with an auction that is not BIN/BO. I know when I take a look at an item, I always look at the clock first. Normally, unless it is a card that I know wont come up again for a while, I wont even open an auction unless there is a BIN or less than a day left. Its just pointless to examine an auction for a non-rare card if there is eight days left on the timer. In fact, if the card isnt low numbered or rare, you shouldn’t be bidding early either. Just put it on your watch list if its important, and wait until later. Early bidders suck when an auction first comes up, mainly because it normally disqualifies a BIN/BO, and puts the auction in the seller's court if he is a shiller. If the card is rare, it’s a little different, because early bids can sometimes prevent off eBay sales, and can put you in the drivers seat for watching the item grow. However, the shill is still a factor, and it is always a good idea to look out for that.
As for the BIN/BO auctions, its always safe to believe that the card is not going to go for less than it usually does. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule, but it’s mostly a waste of time to use lowball offers. If you actually want the card, its better to just offer fair market value, plus a possible incentive of a few extra dollars, just to prevent a loss because the seller hates you. BIN/BO is a great way to buy cards, unless you are dealing with a shop that still operates on book value. Then you should just avoid the item in the interest of time, as they are not going to be accepting reasonable offers. Also, if you want the card, and you put in a lowball offer, don’t expect a counteroffer. Most people, including myself sometimes, just think you are some kid who doesn’t know any better, and will deny you without a thought. If you are indifferent to the card, go ahead and lowball, you may get lucky. No reason to risk a card you want because you want a crazy good deal.
In terms of late bidding, I usually wont bid on a card unless there is less than 30 seconds in the auction. Because sniping, or "eFucking" as my dad calls it, has become so popular, its stupid to put in an early bid on a card you want without considering how many other people want it. Sniping is a great idea, especially if you have found a good program, because you can easily enter in the max price you want without having to sit there and wait. As for me, I don’t like to use programs, mostly because I like to see the auction develop in the last seconds. If the card ends late, I will set an alarm if its important. Its just a thing for me, doesn’t happen often that I need to go out of my way to be there. Plus, the card is going to go at or around SV 99% of the time, so putting in early bids of 10 bucks on a 100 dollar card is just not going to be a good use of resources - unless, like above, its rare and succeptible to off eBay deals.
The important thing remains, if you see a card you want, just be smart about it. Don’t be stupid enough to let a card go because you want to get the best possible deal. Its better to assume the card will go at the expected price, and feel good when you get a deal. Also, the golden rule remains, unless you get some 2,000 dollar card for 200 bucks, there is no reason to go posting steals all over message boards. I will come and strangle you with the cord from your desk lamp.

Unopened Wax Packs Banned By Ebay?
Per new policy, unopened and ungraded wax packs are no longer allowed to be listed on eBay. Thank god. I guess after the massive amounts of pre-searched and resealed wax, eBay has decided it would be best to stop that from happening. So far, this is only for true WAX packs, which is like plugging a hole in the bottom of the sinking ship, so its not the complete ban on single packs altogether that should be enforced. However, with so many one hit per pack products out there, that would be pretty tough.

Hockey Showing Em Who's Boss: Crosby Logo at 16,000
Many of us are wondering what would have been if Tom Brady or Peyton Manning had logo cards when they were rookies. What about LT? How about Albert Pujols or Michael Jordan? What would those be worth? A lot.
Well, for hockey fans, Sidney Crosby, one of the top money grabbers in the hobby does have a logo rookie card, and it is on eBay right now with more than 6 days to go. Price? Over $16,000 with 42 bids. So, its either a Honda Accord or this card, and there is still a lot of time left.
I have long mentioned the 10K cap on modern cards, and how tough it is to break that mark, but this card crossed that line and crapped on it. Personally, I dont really like the look of this card, but it is one of THE Crosby cards to own if you have the bank, or for that matter, own the bank. His RC card from the Cup sells for thousands, and that is pretty crazy by itself, but 16K+ for something like this is shocking.

Fake PSA 9 1952 Bowman Mantle On Ebay
A very hot button issue has come up lately on a number of different message boards around the net and I wanted to post about it here. Apparently, a douchebag from Southern California or Mexico has found a way to counterfeit the PSA holders and labels. He has a bunch of fake 1952 Mantle Bowman cards, and is using his "talent" for making the fake holders to sell them on eBay and Craigslist. It may not be easy to spot for the untrained eye, but many people have the cards in hand and know they are fake. Someone even compared bar codes and they all looked eerily similar.
The first time this was put up for auction, eBay removed it after a bunch of complaints came in. There were also four or five collectors from around the net who purchased similar cards from the guy but immediately realized they were fake. I mentioned a few days ago that its becoming very hard to trust any of these people any more, mainly because the scam level is so fucking high. I also mentioned that no matter what the technology is, someone will find a way to take advantage of it. The fucking idiots who throw ethics and the law out the window are the people that have made this hobby one of the least trustworthy pastimes there is.
According to the boards, PSA has been contacted a number of times, but has yet to do anything about it. Typical.
Guys, it comes down to the golden rule of collecting: IF IT SEEMS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT PROBABLY IS.

This Is A Pure Example Of Ignorance
I cant even remember how many times I have told people that you dont grade low numbered cards, if not only because most of them never come in good condition in the first place. On top of all of that, is a 9.5 really going to do anything to the value of a 1/1? Probably not enough to justify those ridiculous cases. Then, if you consider that your card will probably end up like this idiot's, it becomes a completely ridiculous idea.
Secondly, who titles the auction like that? You didnt think that putting Peyton Manning's full was not the most important thing? I guess it only goes to show that if you are stupid enough to grade this card, you would be stupid enough to title your auction that way.
Lastly, its kind of a bad statement when Exquisite cards arent up to par with condition. I doubt that this card has ever left a holder except when going to the douches at beckett, and from personal experience, Exquisite cards are never perfect when coming out of the box. I have said before that they need to encase the cards, but I was informed that the cost in dollars and time would make it pretty much impossible. Either way, lets hope whoever gets this has the smarts to crack it, because right now I wouldnt even want it like that.
h/t Wheeler for the auction link.

Ok, holy shit. I did not expect this.
So remember when I talked about selling that lot of cards based on the idea that selling your crap in a lot is much better than selling individually? Well, coincidentally, its the truth at the moment.
Wow. Glad to see that my unwanted cards now has the possibility to get me a new Peterson auto or two. Now, granted, having the publicity from this site has definitely contributed to publicity, but its still interesting to see it go for this much.
If you bid, thank you.

Well Lets See If It Works...
Yesterday I documented pure stupidity on the Blowout Card board when one of their members said this GEM of knowledge about Triple Suck:

FINALLY! I CANT BELIEVE THIS WAS PULLED!
Thanks to this seller, you now have the opportunity to own the greatest baseball card ever produced. Its a 1/1, its of one of the most recognizable people in the history of the world, king tut, aannnnnd it will be delivered by camel caravan. Amazing.
The great thing about this auction, is that the seller obviously spent way too much time putting it together, and even though its a once and lifetime opportunity, its still more info than most people get when offering a card like this. On top of the glorious nature of the card, the way it was obtained should be noted. According to the description, the guy did it TTM back in 1321 BCE, only to get back just in time for the ebay sale. In this time of recession, he was able to put an impossible price on an impossible RC card to obtain, and I think its something we need to cover here on SCU. Yes, I did use the royal 'we' for this royal card.
Be sure to check out the Q and A at the bottom.

This Is What Happens When You Are An Idiot Shop Owner
Most of the JD Booty SP Authentic 3 colors have gone for around 30-40 bucks. This guy, who lives in "CARD CITY" thought that was a little low. Considering that Booty is a 6th rounder QB on a team that has been shopping for a TJack replacement, I wholeheartedly agree that he should try to get 500% of the real value of the card. I was going to offer 195, but I saw that he wasnt taking offers. Too bad really. Although the taupe pattern carpet in the background is a nice touch, CARPET-JO!

Someone Paid a Hell Of A Lot For This Card, Wow.
Thanks to Wheeler for passing this on.
I guess that the Forte logo out of SPA has been pulled and sold, and it went for an INSANEULOUS amount of money.
Let me refresh your memory of my hatred for the popularity of Forte's cards: the guy is a mid level prospect, playing for a team that didnt make the playoffs, and did not make ROY. He had a good rookie season, by rookie standards, but things sort of tapered off for him at the end. Usually, stupid things drive a cards worth like what I mentioned above, pro bowl appearances, etc, and yet without that, his still went for a down payment on a car.
When he ends up as the next Rudi Johnson, I just want a big I told you so.
Cue the Forte lovers telling me I am an idiot...

NFL LCM Mirror Black 1/1s and Logo Patches
An interesting lot was posted on eBay lately, and I must say, it is quite impressive. Is it $20,000 impressive? No. But that doesnt mean I dont want it. Here is what I know, the guy used to be on one of the message boards and was buying up all the Mirror blacks for his collection.
Secondly, as with most Mirror Blacks, most of them were quite chipped up beyond acceptability, and it became obvious that you get what you see, hence the far away pics in the auction rather than the scans we are used to.
This brings me to another discussion, which has intrigued me for a number of months. If you have the money to listlessly buy these types of cards, is it cooler to have these, or a plethora of other cool auto memorabila cards. For instance, the Mirror Black Peterson should go for about $1100-$1500 these days, and for $1100, you could buy quite a bit of other Peterson stuff. You could definitely buy my collection and a few others. Yet, that slew of cards just doesnt have the pizzazz of the NFL logo cards. They just dont, because you could show a million autos to a guy and he would be impressed, but show him an NFL logo card of a top player, you are going to get a much more enthusiastic reaction.
As for me, I love the logo cards, as long as they are well done. The problem is that while I am a quality over quantity guy, with the logo cards, the quality is there with the cards I would get instead. I would much rather have an Equisite RC Patch Auto than the Mirror black, even though it is 100 times more available. Thats me though. Obviously this guy wanted the Mirror Blacks and logos of a number of good players.

If You Havent Used eBay, Please Learn How Before You Sell
There is nothing more annoying on this planet than looking at a Best Offer auction and seeing that the seller has 8 offers older than 1 day and all are "still pending seller response" or "expired."
This says to me you are either not familiar with how to use BO or you are a douchebag that holds my money hostage while you sit on other offers. Im guessing most of the people who take this avenue dont understand they are supposed to deny or counter an offer they get, and not wait out the 48 hours. Im sure many sellers dont know you CAN counteroffer. That sucks because now I cant spend the money I have saved up because the seller hasnt responded.
If you are a fucking douche that doesnt respond to the offers on purpose, I hate you, and I hope you die by getting stabbed repeatedly with a rabid badger.

Another Episode Of "YOU SUCK AT SELLING YOUR CARDS"
I was perusing eBay as I usually do every day when I am bored at work, and I found this nugget of sports card auction gold. I find it funny that despite how much time Vick has left on his jail sentence, this card will never go up in value.
Current value to most collectors: $-300 dollars.
Current book value according to auction: $55,000
First off, I dont think this card would be priced. If it was priced, I think the book value he used is not only fucking useless, its probably from 2004.
Thank god he takes best offer, because I only have 15 large to drop on this beast of the beast beater himself. Also, it comes in its very own Beckett holder from the National Trade Conference. You know what that means? Perfect condition.
I think the 150 dollars shipping is suspect though - but that is the only suspect thing I see.

The Stupidity Of This Auction May Never Be Eclipsed
If you have seen this, you are probably as shocked as I am. Not because he wants $12,000 for the lot, or because he has THAT many Kobe Bryant autos from ONE set, but because he has graded every last fucking one of them, including the 1/1. I almost had to cover my mouth to keep the belly laugh from getting too loud.
Lets run this down, here. Cards from an extremely condition sensitive set (check), cards numbered less than 25 (check), graded 1/1 (check), ludicrious price (check), cards a lot of people would want, minus the graded case (check). Im sorry sir, you must be castrated to prevent you from contributing further to the gene pool. Personally, I would put his sharpness at that of a bent spoon. He is a few colors short of a paint set to say the least, if not only because the cards range from a 7.5 (!) to 8.5 (ha!). That is what you get for being the biggest mark this side of WWF Wrestlemania.

NFL Week 2: Value Bumps (UPDATED)
Here are my big booty bumps in eBay value for the week's big players:
Darren McFadden
Fargas went out, so you knew things were going to go McFadden's way. Who knew that he would put up the numbers he did, wow. I thought his numbers were high pre-season, but they will be even higher now that he had his first big game. If Fargas is out longer, you can bet your ass he will take advantage. I expect big numbers coming in auctions if he has a semi-good performance. The idiots are expecting All Day - which they wont get - so they think they need to jump on before the bomb drops. Hold your horses people, the Raiders are awful. His numbers wont be THAT good.
Bump: UP
Matt Forte
Come on back to earth. Thank you. Big I told you so here. 29 for less than 100? Pretty average game for a starter with close to 30 carries.
Bump: DOWN
Michael Turner
Same thing as above. Thats why its called SMALL SAMPLE SIZE. The number one rule of smart collecting is to never make decisions on small sample size. Im sure his season will be good, but not 220 and 2 TDs good.
Bump: DOWN
Chris Johnson / Jonathan Stewart
Both of these guys are showing why they were picked as high as they were. Im sure I was not the only one that shouted "WHAT?" when the Panthers drafted Stewart. That feeling is all but gone now. Both have had two good games in a row, and despite his ridiculous autograph, Johnson's cards should slowly climb alongside Stewart's. Right now, they are at the top of the RC running back list, with McFadden close behind. Too bad the Titans are SO FUCKING BAD. How are they 2-0? Jesus christ.
Bump(s): UP
Matt Ryan
Not a good game this week. Another low yardage performance, with 2 INTs this time. This should be expected from a week one starting RC QB, but the idiots dont get this. I say his cards drop closer to where they were at the beginning of the season, but not that much.
BUMP: DOWN
Adrian Peterson
Last years sensation has put up two very good games behind a BAD offense. I still wouldnt buy at these prices, unless he is your favorite player and you have the money, but that may change soon. If he continually puts up monster numbers like the 5.5 ypc, buy in. I see big things.
BUMP: EVEN
Calvin Johnson
At the beginning of the season last year, there were two at the top - Calvin Johnson and a close behind Adrian Peterson. After the Lions were continually led to the crapper by Jon Kitna, Calvin Johnson went with them. His value dropped dramatically, and he fell in behind Lynch and Peterson as the top guys in value. Now, with two GREAT games under his belt, his value will come up pretty huge. He will still never reach the heights he should because receiver cards are not worth anything if your name isnt Jerry Rice. Maybe he can change this.
BUMP: UP
Greg Jennings
See above. The only problem with Jennings is that he put up huge numbers against the worst and one of the worst pass defenses in the league. Can you even name a Lions d-back? Regardless, I think he will be done good by Aaron Rodgers.
BUMP: UP
Aaron Rodgers
Man, I had a bad feeling as a Vikings fan when he came around. I knew he had shown flashes of brilliance, but this is getting nuts. Again, he has the same issue as Jennings, lets see how he does against a top tier pass defense.
BUMP: WAY UP
Potential Bumps for Next Week:
Matt Ryan - going up against KC is good for anyone. Could be big.
Rashard Mendenhall - No touches this week and he gets Philly next week? SELL NOW.
Aaron Rodgers - If he goes huge against the league's best, even I would buy now.
Jonathan Stewart - This could work out really well or not at all. There are no in betweens here. Especially with MN limiting Addai to 1.2 per carry. Good luck buddy.
Eddie Royal - If he does amazing, he will jump into the top tier, if he hasnt already. Wow, I never expected it out of this kid.
Jay Cutler - See above. He was already valuable because he doesnt sign much due to him being an ass. If he continues to shine next week, I would buy in. He could be an Elite QB in value by the time its over this season.

A Comment On eBay Item Descriptions
As part of my research on eBay auctions, I have compiled a list of 10 or so claims that must be included in every auction you post if you are the smartest/coolest/MOJOist collector around. Now, for our audience at home, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE CLAIMS IS ONE HUNDRED AND TEN PERCENT TRUE. It was verified by a guy at a friend's shop. I saw it with my own eyes. Because of this, you must put this in your auction so your item will sell for more.
1. This card is MINT condition
2. This card is a 1/1
3. The player on this card is going to be a hall of famer
4. The player on this card is going to do amazing this year / have a breakout season
5. Get this card before he blows up like ____________
6. This is the best card in the set
7. I am selling this card for a friend who pulled this amazing patch card
8. This is the only one on eBay, so its very rare / 1 of 1 / expensive
9. I will consider any offer
10. Another card just like this sold for _____________
Thank god all of these are true, because I am going to bid at least 50 dollars more because of that.

Tales From TWGM: How Not To Do 1/1s
From time to time, I like to peruse the high price listings of the card section of TWGM just so I can find comedic hobby gold. I warn you, stupidity is to follow. I dont even think the guys who sell this stuff are Coe Jollectors because they seem to be even dumberererer than that. Either way, I bring you...
