SCU Breaks: SP Authentic 5 Box Break Presented By Blowout Cards.com

Well, we may have started off VERY slow with a bunch of junk, but we sure ended with a bang. Gotta love it. I will apologize ahead of time for the lack of quality for the video, hopefully I can get a new camera soon.

Thanks again to Chris and Pat over at Blowout Cards, they made this a quick and easy break. Please check out their awesome site to find the best prices on wax for the entire web. Tell them I sent you for a nice pat on the back.

Anyways, here are scans of a few of the big hits, and as you will notice there are only four auto patches. We did get shorted a hit in one of our boxes, so I will be contacting UD customer service on our behalf. Whatever they send us will go to the person who owns the team. I am kind of pissed that missing hits are still a problem this year, but hopefully we can get it taken care of very quickly. For those of you who have questions, please let me know, again I am very sorry.

Oh, I forgot this one on the last pack of the last freaking box!

Boom. Cards will be going out later this week, be sure to let me know (if you havent already) if I need to send you more than just the rare base, rookies, and other stuff. If you decide to leave the base, they will go to the kids at a local shop I visit, I dont collect them or keep them. Thanks again for participating!

NOTE: This is the second year in a row we have pulled the big rookie out of a box. Last year we pulled Chris Johnson out of Exquisite, Matt Ryan out of Premiere, and a few other amazing cards. Talk about LUCK!

Have Old SPA 3 Colors Become Too Risky?

I was going through some of the older SPA rookie patch autos on eBay, and I have gotten to the point now where I am questioning most of the three color patches from years past. Obviously if you are looking at Chris Henry or Jerome Simpson, its one thing, but for players like Sidney Rice, Adrian Peterson, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Chris Johnson, etc, it may be too risky now to get one. I am beginning to support the thought that three colors may be a bad idea when you can have a two color for less money, and you know its more likely to be legit.

Because so many fake RPAs have been sold, some of them are making their second or third go around, and at this point, we may not even be able to trace it back to a shady seller. This means, legit people who happened to unknowingly buy fake patch cards are selling them now, and they only deserve my ridicule for not doing their research.

This also begs the question if it is only safe to buy cards like the RPAs early in the release time frame when the donkey rapers havent gotten their grubby mitts on them yet. For now, I am going to say that it is heading in that direction, or at least until UD gets off their lazy ass and does something to help us.

Its at this time that I am happy to be someone who buys early, because I know the cards I buy arent fake. On top of all of that, I have become EXTREMELY skeptical by nature, so I havent even bought a three color before. If you are in the market for one, I would be sure to think twice, or at least run a few photobucket searches to see if its been posted before, because you never know.

Lastly, I have seen a rash of non-graded, authenticated, RPAs hit ebay with obviously fake patches. Remember before jumping on one of these, "Authentic" cards just minimally examine the authenticity of the card's patch area, and dont authenticate the patches. Just because a card features a Beckett blue slab doesnt mean the patch is real. It just means the card is real.

As always, the biggest defense is your response to seeing red flags. If you watch your ass, you will be fine.

Upper Deck Blog: SP Authentic Retrospective

Yes, yes, everyone knows that I love SPA. Its my favorite set of the year, so I put together a look back at the different rookie patches and rookie auto patches as a complement to the recent previews. You can take a look at the article over on the UD blog, hopefully the set will live up to my expectations this year. Looks pretty good so far.

First Look: 2009 SP Authentic Football

Upper Deck posted the SPA photos today on their facebook page, and when I saw the post, my heart jumped. SP Authentic is my favorite set of the year, which means that its pretty much a holiday when I can see how its going to look. This year, I kind of had an initial poor reaction to the new design, but I think I have warmed up now. Of course, now that SP officially stands for "Smoky Players, " ill let you guys see for yourselves why I had the initial reaction I did.

I will say this, the rookie jumbo patch signatures look like they could be some of the coolest cards released during the entire year. Football hasnt seen signed swatches like this since 2006 Exquisite, so Im glad to see that they are making a comeback. Also, the Rookie Authentics dont look all that bad, and the team color elements on a white background does look nice. Im not getting why UD chose smoke as the theme for the set, as the simplicity of the design without the smoke would be amazing. Maybe we will get lucky and it wont be as noticible.

Player Collecting And Survival

There are a lot of player collectors in this hobby, myself included. Personally, its the only way I can stay sane, because if chased after everything from a team or a college, I would be broke. Same with set collecting, its tough to devote the time for trading and watching eBay. However, that isnt a bad thing in any way. If you are one of those team or set collectors, you have my kudos for your dedication.

Despite the sheer number of ways to collect, I get a lot of emails from fledgling player collecting that ask where to start. Its easy to see why that is a big problem for people who dont know much about the hobby, as the number of options out there can be tough to decipher.

First, and most importantly for player collectors, you need your player's rookie card. Its tough to identify with a collection unless you see that rookie card in there. Of course, that may not be possible with some of the older, more expensive players, but for the modern guys, it shouldnt be too hard to find an affordable one. For me, I always get the Topps Chrome offering, as it is the one I have always gone after since the inception of the brand. If there isnt a Topps Chrome card for your guy, due to age of the player or otherwise, eBay is always a good place to look for one that looks the best for you. Take someone like Jared Allen, a guy who doesnt have many cards, especially from his rookie year. When I started to collect him, I had to do some research before I found out that the 2005 Score auto was the only early card worth going after for him, as Rookie cards were scarce for him. The 2004 Bowman card didnt seem like a good bet for a nice rookie centerpiece, so I had to get the auto as my staple. Yes, I know its a second year, but its all I cared about.

The second thing I think you need as a player collector, is a good auto centerpiece. In my mind, there is nothing better than Exquisite or National Treasures for that card, although the money may be a deterrant. I would say that if you can afford it, go straight for the on card auto out of one of these sets. If not, the next level of cards would come from SP Authentic, and luckily, there are a lot of on card subsets to chase from the product. The design is always great, and the autos are usually a great piece for many player collectors. They also have VERY few parallels, meaning that the numbering on those cards is legit, unlike sets like Triple Threads.

Also, if you see that auto cards are out of your price range, auto'ed memorabilia is actually a great alternative. Most 8x10's are great for framing and mini helmets can look amazing on a shelf. They also cost a lot less than many of the top RC autos, which is great. I know those mini helmets are always a priority for every player I collect. The thing I would watch out for are fakes, as signed memorabilia is always a risk if you didnt see the guy sign the item himself.

Many player collectors also love 1/1s, especially if they have a league or team logo on it. I think that certain 1/1s are definitely worth your time, but I would watch out for others. For instance, if you have the cash to go after a logo patch card, go for it, but if its a printing plate, leave it alone. Printing plates rarely hold value, you have to pay a lot for some of them, and in my opinion, they are some of the ugliest pieces of shit out there. Save your money for other stuff, especially when you find out that most printing plates arent 1/1s, more like 1/4s due to the colors needed to print a card. Topps, UD and others number them 1/1s to hook you in to buying more product. If they make the chase easier to catch, people buy more - right Moments and Milestones?

Many player collectors also delve into super collecting, a practice where they try to get one of everything for a certain player. I really dont think this a good idea due to the number of cards and 1/1s that players have, so its better to just focus on what you like. I kind of relate super collecting to Heroin Hero from South Park, as you chase the dragon forever but never catch it. Instead of super collecting, I would rather suggest saving your money up and buying a game used item like a jersey, or going hardcore for a nice autographed item like a bat or football. If memorabilia is not your thing, there is always bigger and better. There is not a good reason to try to get every base Topps card parallel if you hate the cards. Go after something you like.

Lastly, you really should go after anything that catches your eye, but dont go busting wax to find it. The way to find it is to set up searches under "my eBay" by clicking the "save this search" at the top of search result pages on the site. You can then receive daily email notification under the settings that are customized to whatever you are looking for. What I do is I break the searches down by the categories on the side of the page to avoid general results. If you are looking for a certain card, this can be a great way to be alerted. For me, I am a huge fan of many of the late year Upper Deck broducts because I see them to be the best designed and the most valuable football products there are. I set up my searches when the products come out, and buy the ones I think look cool.

Overall, player collecting is a great way to get going in a hobby. It gives you a specific target to branch out from, and really gives you a great idea of the true value of certain products without having to monitor a ton of cards on eBay or scanning tons of message boards for trade requests. Most of the time, barring extenuating circumstances like extreme SPs, if a card for your guy is worth more in one set than another, those values should hold for the rest of the players too. Keep your head on a swivel and try to become very familiar with your likes and dislikes so that you can learn to avoid scams and problems. Of course, you can always look for answers here and on the other blogs too. We are always happy to help.

I Have High Expectations For 2009 Products

Every year, readers send me boatloads of emails asking which products are the best. I usually have to give them a short answer in the interest of not writing a novel, but most of the time it boils down to 5 products that don’t usually disappoint. Last year I talked here about my favorite cards of the year for each rookie class, so I thought I would update things a little with performance updates based on the 2008 products.

Here is my list for 2009:

1. SP Authentic Rookie Patch Auto

I put this one at number one because the design is usually the best of the year, they are usually half the price of their exquisite counterparts, they are on card autos, and they have been around longer than most of the other ones that are making an appearance on this list. Collectors value these over many of the more high end products mainly for those reasons and I agree. SPA is my favorite of the year almost all the time.

2. Exquisite Rookie Patch Auto

These cards come from the Bentley of sports card sets, and usually the design and value reflect that. I loved the RPAs from this past year, which offset the suspect year before it. These are the most valuable cards of the year, but you will pay almost twice the price of a normal card to get one. If you had started a collection of your guy, this would be the centerpiece.

3. National Treasures Rookie Patch Auto

I am only referring to the on card version of this set, as the others can get nuts with the different diecuts. I especially liked this set last year, as the tapered windows were a major, MAJOR upgrade. These may come out of the second most expensive product of the year, but they don’t live up to the cards from SPA and Exquisite. The reason that they are so high on this list, is they are the first super high end card of the year, and most consider these to be Cadillacs to the Bentley mentioned above. I would be fine with a Cadillac.

4. Topps Chrome Rookie Auto

I love Topps chrome, it’s the one Topps product that usually doesn’t disappoint. Add in the fact that they dropped the price last year, and I must have busted 5 boxes. The Chrome autos are usually just the auto'ed version of the base, a tactic I wholeheartedly approve of, and the simplistic card usually scores well with everyone. Although the design isnt fireworks in my heart this year, Im hoping it will look better in person. It usually does. Now, the photography is a whole different story altogether.

5. Leaf Limited Patch Auto

Leaf Limited was a let down last year due to the format switch. The patch autos were still great, however, and that was enough to get me to buy into a few group breaks. I think these made the Contenders from last year look like crap, but that was just me. This year, I hope they are back, and I hope they continue to be one of the more aesthetically pleasing. The one thing I am dreading is more black sharpie over the player's pic. That didn’t make sense with room below.

Honorable Mentions:

- Playoff Contenders Ticket Auto - no material, which I like, but last few years design has been ridiculously bad.
- Leaf Certified Material Mirror Blue Freshman Fabric - Loved 2007, HATED 2008, 2009 is a ?
- Ultimate Collection RC Autos - These were kind of botched in terms of the usual format, but I loved these last year.

Be sure to realize that new products come out every single year, and this year will be no exception as Donini tries to make a splash. So far, we havent gotten much in terms of plans, but you can bet that the other companies will have their guns cocked and ready to fire with their own sexy products. As long as you are good at spotting the '1 year duds' as I call them, you will be fine.

Now That Its Over...

So, I have been obsessing over a number of different things now that the Super Bowl is done. First is keeping up with completed auctions of the SPA RC patch autos, as I am continually surprised by some of the prices. The other thing I have been monitoring is the Hail Redskins Mock Draft Database. On the site they have a compilation of just about every mock draft out there, and it is updated daily until draft day. I love it. Im obsessed.

It seems that the people who actually know about this stuff are mostly predicting that the Lions are going to go with a QB as the first pick, and that the two best QBs may be taken in the first three picks, or at least by San Fran at number 11. I would say that right now, I agree that this will be the case, but not that it should be the case.

If you look back, there are a number of QBs that were taken number 1 just because they had ridiculous skills, and only a HANDFUL worked out. Jury is still out on Russell, but fading fast. The thing is, that despite having ridiculous skills, they dont always transfer to being a good QB in the NFL. Its a completely different situation than every snap they have taken in the NCAA, and its pretty dumb to take a chance at number one with anything less than a guy with those ridicuskills (<---- that was a typo, but so awesome, I had to keep it). You see, there are certain positions that translate very well from the NCAA to the NFL, mainly WRs, RBs and OTs. Those are who I would expect to be a good investment at that pick. Interestingly enough, there are always quite a few OTs in the draft, and the Lions have drafted a WR in the first round every year since their formation as a team. So, lets go over their choices:

1. Matt Stafford - I like Stafford, but he is only at the top of the list because there is no one else. I dont think he is a good investment at number 1.

2. Matt Sanchez - I like Sanchez too, but he is only coming out because Bradford stayed in school. Why waste your pick?

3. Andre Smith - I think this pick is pretty good here. The lions definitely need an OT, and they can pick up one of the other QBs with their later first round pick.

4. Michael Oher - Another OT, and another good shot at a good Tackle. You can never have too many good tackles, and you know Oher will anchor your line for a long time. Plus, I would think its easier to convince a lineman to play in Detroit than a QB with number 1.

5. Michael Crabtree - Just a beast of a WR, should be amazing. With Roy Williams gone, and only CJ left, it may not be a long shot to see the Lions maybe invest in another WR. It wouldnt be stupid. Maybe hope that Percy Harvin is still around when they come back around.

As for Hobby love, Im sure that Crabtree, Stafford and even Knowshon Moreno and Chris Wells will be the stars of the class. I know that the QBs usually make up most of the worth of the year's RCs, and I dont think this year will be any different.

As for my team, I would love to see the Vikings have a shot at Stafford, Sanchez or even Josh Freeman at their pick at 22, but they really need a vet to come in rather than start fresh with an RC, especially when the top 2 QBs will surely be gone. I think they will either go with an OT from the massive list, or a CB like Alphonso Smith or Vontae Davis, maybe even go WR with Percy Harvin or Hakeem Nicks if they are still around. Personally, I am still fucking pissed they didnt pick Brian Brohm last year, because I think he was a great project for them to have in the wings while T Jack blew it again, but I guess Tyrell Johnson is okay now that Sharper is almost surely gone.

I guess ill have to wait and see.

Product Review: 2008 SP Authentic Football

SP authentic is one of my favorite products over the last few years because it never disappoints with its set. It usually has some of the prettiest cards of the year, and the autographed patches are some of the most valuable RCs right under Exquisite. It went live after much delay on friday, and I am quite impressed.

The Good

This product's main focus is the RC patch autos, and this year they look as good, if not better than last year's. People were shocked by the horizontal orientation of the cards in 07, but I fucking loved it. This year, they stay with the same orientation, and it looks even better with the new patch windows and autographs right underneath.

I noticed that the theme of the set is to create bullseye targets of modern weaponry almost, like looking through an advanced sight on a rifle, and that was a pretty cool idea. Maybe its supposed to be like a cumpass rather than a weapon sight, but it looks very modern and very technological, and for some reason, I like it. It works well in my mind. I still like having a set look like everything is stitched into the card like RC threads, but this makes everything look futuristic. Even the scrub autos carry this theme, with full, bold colors. Triple suck has everything as bright and borderline neon, while SPA is all bold and prominent colors. SPA makes triple threads look like a 2nd grader did it with a coloring book for half the price. I love it.

In terms of the autos in the set, this is one of the only sets to stay COMPLETELY on card. That is a prize, and it is glorious. Every single card in the product that has a signaure, was done on the card itself, including duals and trips. That is amazing, Bravo.

Last year, I really liked the Chirography and the Sign of the times subset's design, and this year, they look pretty good too. They fit the theme of the set quite nicely, and I like that the autos dont go up the side this time. Plus, there is not a single "helmet off" card from either of the subsets, and that is a big plus.

Lastly, there are quite a few veteran based subsets in this product, a rookie based adventure, and I must applaud UD for not making them an after thought. They bumped up the quantity of RC patch autos in this set, and I think that is awesome, but also didnt forget about the By The Letters, or even some of the other sets like the Chirography's, SP Authentics, and the SOTT's. I like that about SPA more than anything. Big props for keeping offensive lineman off the checklist too, from what I can tell.

The Bad

There isnt many "major" problems with SPA this year but there are a few minor ones. First off, the leatherheads were a good idea on paper, but the execution is pretty poor, if not only because of the pictures. Gregg said it was tough to get them excited to wear one of the old school leather helmets, and I understand that, but the pictures look like someone just took away their lolli's. They not only look ridiculous in their helmets themselves, but the players look like douches. Nice try, but axe it for next year.

Another good on paper idea was the rookie retro jersey autos, but there are too many problems with those to make it a good execution. I thought the designs would vary card to card, almost like creating a patch auto from that year that didnt have them, but instead they are all the same type from Vick's rookie year. It was cool to get Fran "Turkenton" in that set too, but dumb to have them as all part of the same design. It was a time to shine with design (no rhyme intended) and that ball was dropped.

The Ugly

I dont mind that there are redemptions in the set, its a necessary evil with a product that is all on card, but when half of the RC class' biggest names are redemptions, that fucking sucks. With 2007, Peterson, Quinn, Johnson and Lynch were all there and ready to go, but with 2008, Flacco, Johnson and others are not. Completely unacceptable when they should have been the focus of the auto getting venture.

I told Gregg straight out that the Number Pieces set was beyond stupid looking when the sell sheet was first put out. As good as the Exquisite version is, is as bad as this version is. They trade the cut out jersey pieces in Exquisite's version for an idiot looking manufactured patch, which in turn it makes SPA look like Topps Lettermen. That, my friends, should NEVER FUCKING HAPPEN. Ditch it.

Overall, I think SPA is a continued expectation of excellence, and for the price, you almost cant beat SPA in any way, shape, or form. Its almost like buying a high end product, and paying for a mid end - something that every single collector appreciates. Go buy a box or two this year, and I am sure that you wont be disappointed.

First SP Authentic Images Hit The Boards

Aside from the fact that the numbering is higher this year, slightly, I really dig the design and the way these look. I really wish that more cards would use the full bleed white borderless design more often.

Per Gregg, SPA numbering is higher this year so that they could put more of them in each case. I believe there will be 8 per 12 box case, and I fully support that decision. SPA patch autos are the focus every year, and I love seeing more of them, without a doubt.

Monthly Box Break Club

Everyone has paid for the January break which will be 4 boxes of 2008 SP Authentic Football. I posted earlier last week that the video of team assignments would be tonight. Due to some job requirements I was not able to get it done tonight, but will be posting it on Wednesday night. Due to the delay in the release the delay of the team assignments will still give us plenty of time to do trades, etc. (SP Authentic's release was moved from January 7th to January 28th).

Comments are appreciated.

Ridiculously High Cost Break: SP Authentic FB Case

Guys, I am throwing this out there, and I want to hear input. There has been talk of busting a case of SPA Football this year, and I wanted to see if anyone was in based on the following parameters:

2 Random Teams: 84 dollars

-or-

1 Random Team: 42 dollars

12 boxes, 3 hits per box, 8 RC patch autos per case, 4 other autos like the leatherheads or the letter autos per case, a whole lotta base.

What should we do? Should we do this at all? Could we find 32 people to go in if we chose the cheaper route? Please let me know.

NOTE: THIS PRODUCT IS NOT OUT UNTIL JANUARY, KEEP THAT IN MIND PLEASE.

First Look: 2008 SP Authentic FB

ITS HERE! ITS HERE! We finally get our first look at SP Authentic, and I must say it looks fucking great. Everything looks snazzy as fucking hell, and I am really excited for it. They went with horizontal formatting again for the RC Patch autos, and I am a big proponent of that. They also keep the white background (YES!) and reshape the patch window to look a lot better than the thing from last year.

Also, we get a preview of the By The Letters and I assure you they will be amazing as usual. I am praying for a Peterson one, and I hope that they dont mess with a good thing when it comes to these.

Lastly the RC Leatherheads look unusual in terms of the contents of the photos, but the idea is pretty cool. It again looks like all of the autos will be on card and this could be a frontrunner for product of the year.

Get the rest of the information I published on SP Authentic from my interview with Gregg, maybe we can get some other cool previews now that its public.

My Morning of Rocking Out With Gregg Kohn of Upper Deck

Well, it looks like SCU is growing by leaps and bounds, and I am glad that we are reaching as many people as we do. I have known for a while that manufacturers and other associated people read this blog and it pleased me when Gregg Kohn, the Football Brand Manager at Upper Deck, stepped up and offered himself up as a guinea pig for my fledgling interview skills. It didn’t work out originally as our schedules didn’t coordinate, but we have kept trying, and it finally happened this morning. Ill tell you guys, I learned more in my 45 minutes of speaking with him, than I thought I could ever learn about this industry. He answered all my questions with the utmost honesty, and wasn’t afraid to put it in language that I use every day. With that, I wanted to first express my uptmost thanks for taking the time to speak with a nobody like myself. Thanks to Gregg, I do have some really cool info about the upcoming year, and some really interesting stuff about the process he goes through with each product.

First I wanted to start with the product I just stuck at the top of my list of things newbies should bust. SP Authentic is a favorite of many collectors, including myself, and Gregg had some awesome stuff to go over. First off, the coveted RC patches are no longer going to be seeded at 6 per case, but rather now at 8 per case. There will be a guaranteed amount of A listers and top RCs in every case again - something I think is beyond awesome - and he promised the cards look better than they ever have. He also clued me in to some new innovations that I think could be the best thing about this product. In those 4 boxes you don’t get the RC Patch auto you have a chance at a signed By The Letter like last year, but also a few new things. The first is retro RC Patch autos of people like Favre, Tomlinson, and others who didn’t have the chance to get a SP Authentic Patch auto. These will be ALL on card and should be ridiculously awesome. You will also have the chance at RC Leatherheads which include cards of the 2008 class that include pieces of old school leather helmets they wore during the RC premiere - again ALL on card sigs(or maybe on helmet?). The product should be about the same price point, so that is all really cool. Gregg said he would send some pics, so I am praying he does.

Secondly, I wanted to correct a mistake I made with Ultimate 2008, where I said they were re-inserting the 1997 Legends series that everyone loved. Its basically the "A Piece Of History" 500 HR club set from baseball, in that it is the most popularly collected set among Footballers, and just like the extension of the APOH set, they are actually extending this set to include players from recent years. They will be in the same format, all ON CARD, and should be awesome. I can still hope for buybacks of the old set, but this is good too.

He also talked about how Ultimate is changing to a new format with a focus on getting collectors more cards that rock, and I think it is awesome. The whole set features hard signed cards and is one of the 6-7 sets that UD will put out this year featuring on card stuff. He said its actually better to get on card sigs because they don’t have to pay someone to affix the stickers, they don’t look as bad, and they don’t end up with a backlog of 2004 stickers in the warehouse like I believe Topps has. Bravo to UD for that.

With Exquisite this year, they are not holding back, which is great. They are including 6 cards with all new designs for each subset - THANK YOU!! - and have even added a bonus for collectors who buy it. In each box, there will be a separate one card pack, similar to UD Black that will contain an "Exquisite Gold" card autograph. It will be either an auto or auto memorabilia, and should be ridiculously cool. It will have exclusive 1/1 content, and I think this could be huge. He also mentioned they have had Tiger Woods exclusively sign 5 patch cards, and as you can imagine they may be some of the most expensive cards ever produced.

He also mentioned revamps of SP Rookie Threads and SP Rookie Edition to include some new stuff that seemed really cool, hopefully he wont disappoint. At least we wont get weird gold and gray letters of McFadden and Ryan like we did last year, as this year they are all college team themed. He said it was tough to anticipate letters to build for the rookies because you don’t know what team they are on when you build them. They went with college because it ties the card to the player, and I think that is a good thing.

Moving on from the new releases, we talked about shifts in the industry, and him being a former shop owner, he showed a lot in his expansive knowledge of what is going on at our level. We discussed at length that the costs of getting sigs on the cards going up because a lot of players are realizing that in the only sport with 3 competing brands, they can play each company against the other. He even mentioned that Ahmad Rashad wanted 50 bucks a card, which I had to laugh at. He talked about catering more products to the shop people because with the state of the economy, its tougher to get a new high-end release out without hurting the people who sell it. I think this will mean more affordability for the collector in a trickle down fashion, and I was happy to hear that they consider each part of the equation. If stores have to dump a product because it is too expensive to sell, we lose in the long run. I guess that’s why Icons is so popular.

As Upper Deck collectors, we had a long string of years where the release calendar was ever changing. He mentioned that is why DLP has such success and failure at the same time, mainly because everyone knew what to expect. He said that now they have a better idea of success rate, they can head in that direction while still maintaining a lot of creativity. He said that one of the possible new products for next year will be Philidelphia edition, which takes a page from the Goudey sets in baseball. He didn’t have much, other than the product would have buybacks from the original sets.

I brought up a lot of how I felt about certain things, like non-autoed manufactured letters, and he had an interesting perspective. He said that rather than throwing more crap jerseys in a box, they thought they would include the letters as a way to add a little more value - which they did in Icons. He also said they were handcuffed by a lot of the celebrities backing out at the last minute, which is understandable.

We discussed a lot of the bad things like Chirography and Ultimate of last year, and he was definitely not afraid to admit his mistakes. That was more than refreshing, and he promised to make sure the quality of the products would be much more thought out. He said it was tough to imagine a street reception, and that’s why they are trying to stay away from needlessly high end products like Chirography was last year. Mucho bueno on that front.

The last thing we talked about was the Peterson patch I posted on a week or so ago. He said he wanted to create an exquisite database of the patches, but the cards and the people who would do that are in different parts of the country. They fly down to Texas to pack every card by hand, and he expressed they might start taking pictures of the patches they think might be questioned. He said that as far as he is concerned, the patch RCs will be much more likely to impress, and that they will do their best to protect the collector. He would put a design over the patches to prevent faking, but he said there would be more complaints about that than the actual douchebags who take advantage, so he decided against it. I agree.

I wish I could have you guys listen to the whole conversation, because it was so fucking awesome to have the kind of talk from a higher up I got from Gregg, and I must say I was thoroughly impressed with the stuff they were coming out with. If you guys have questions about some of the things I mentioned, feel free to email me as you like.

Ill say this, after speaking with Gregg, I am MUCH more likely to buy a UD product now that he has explained the blood sweat and tears that goes into every product they put out. I know he is connected to the hobby base level more than I expected, and he is beyond a nice guy. Thanks again for the time!
