My Initial Post Was Correct - Upper Deck is OUT of Football

Upper Deck just posted on their Twitter account that they no longer able to produce football cards after not being able to come to terms with NFL Properties. This isnt just some unconfirmed rumor anymore, and I am sad to say that there will no longer be licensed Upper Deck products in football. Although they may still be able to produce NCAA cards, they will not be producing anything with NFL teams or jerseys on it. This is a HUGE loss for the hobby, the industry and everyone involved, and you can bet that things are going to change.

I will have further thoughts on this tomorrow.

Fuck me.

  1. How much do you want to bet that the NFL was worried about whether they would ever get paid without having to sue UD for the license fees

  2. Oh this is heartbreaking. I can't believe no SPX, SP authentic, Exquisite, or Ultimate for 2010. Surely they will come up with a way to work around it hopefully. This just stinks. My son is really upset about this cause he really liked UD over "flopps".

  3. you know, there is also little league that UD can put out products for, so that along with NCAA means you can get the rookies cards of the future bigleaguers or gridiron greats.

    hahahahahaha...

  4. Well, on the bright side this will save me some serious coin next year. I can put the money I save on multiple overhyped junk boxes toward nice singles now.

  5. This is devastating. The hobby may not survive losing UD. We could be looking at the end of sports cards as we know it.

  6. As I said in my March 24th comments - Upper Deck is Gone - Bankruptcy is coming soon

  7. No doom and gloom. The card industry will live on... It will evolve. It may not be as cool as it was in the "good ol' days" but every generation would say the same.

  10. Why does everyone think that UD disappearing is bad? Did you already forgive and forget that they counterfeited their own cards? If they have no issue counterfeiting their own cards, and can't pay for the contracts they have, what makes you believe anything they put in their cards is remotely authentic? I say adios and let some unknown upstart take over the hobby like UD once did. Let's just hope they don't turn out as crooked as UD.

  11. Being excited about the 2010 release calendar just became a whole lot harder...

  13. Always hate to see hobby giants go down, but UD kinda did this to themselves. I mostly buy Topps (baseball) anyway, so it's no REAL loss (for me), but a little competition never hurt anybody.

Hopefully they still put out NCAA Sweet Spot and not just close up shop altogether! I'd been sending job applications to UD for years, and now I'm glad nothing ever panned out!

  14. mmmm Maybe I'll be able to put a topps set together this year after all, or does this mean that the italians are going to be the only ones producing NFL and NBA cards? And UD already cancelled an NHL product. I can still see their toes twitching but how much longer can they last?

  15. This was expected, especially after the NHL made its move earlier. McWilliams has screwed and pissed off too many people, even his biggest allies, to stay in business.

I am sad for the workers they have remaining there, most of them are good folks. It's the idiot at the top who ruined a good thing.

  16. What a way to say goodbye to U.D football then with a 3 color patch on card auto of Crabtree.

    Thanks Upper Deck!!
