The Vikings Are Officially The Red Sox Of Football

It was a great season, but again the Vikings are home watching the Super Bowl after a missed opportunity late in the fourth quarter. In 1998 it was Gary Anderson that missed a chip shot to seal the deal, this year it was Brett Favre trying to make a play on a down that should have been a run. Much like the Boston Red Sox's epic drought of World Series titles, the Vikings have epic fail written squarely across their foreheads.

Listen, dont get me wrong, the Vikings did not deserve to win this game with all the mistakes that were made during the game. Fumbles were as plenty as bare breasts on bourbon street during Mardi Gras, and a penalty on the last drive for 12 men knocked them out of field goal range. How could you, in all seriousness, figure out how to blow a shot like that with a penalty as stupid as 12 men in the huddle. I could understand if this was 2nd grade fucking pop warner football, but not in the NFL. For that, someone needs to lose their job.

Secondly, the fumbles were ridiculous. The Berrian fumble in the red zone during an amazing drive was completely unacceptable, and the Peterson fumble on the goal line at the end of the first half should be on blooper reals for the next fucking century. To think that a team with so much to play for would come in and blow it in that fashion is heart-wrenching.

Then, on the Favre interception, I have no idea why that was not a run play. This has continually been an issue all season, and Childress is responsible. This includes problems during the Bears loss in Chicago, and a few calls from this game as well. Longwell is as sure footed of a kicker as any in the league, and there was no reason to call a pass. When you factor in that the Vikings still had one time out, and Favre still decided to throw across the field, rather than throwing to Berrian or keeping it, the reason they lost becomes more apparent.

Im disappointed, Im angry, I dont even know what to say anymore. It feels like 1998 all over again, although the salt in the wound is absent with the Saints being favored and at home. Regardless, the Vikings now need to move forward as a franchise, with or without Favre, and figure out a way to exercise the demons.

The season wasnt a complete loss, but it sure feels like it now. I can only imagine what is going on in that locker room, but it doesnt really matter now. All that matters to me is that it happens some time in my life. From here on out, after this loss, its looking more and more grim every day.

  1. Minnesota shouldn't have even been in the game with all their turnovers! Favre has to know better, even though a pass play has been called. All Favre had to do was run one yard, sit on his butt and call timeout. Kick the field goal next and you are on your way to the Super Bowl! Wasted opportunity Brett!

  2. I will say this, that Meachem catch to seal it wasnt complete, and the penalty was ticky tack. Granted, the officiating crew sucked all day.

  3. Man, I'm sorry about that game, Gellman. I was rooting for the Vikings, and I kept thinking how much the loss must suck for Vikings fans. But look at the bright side. They had an amazing season and got farther than 28 other teams. Someday the Vikings will go back to the Super Bowl, and maybe win, and it'll be even more sweet for you because of heartbreaks like this. Here's hoping that hell will freeze over and we'll see a Minnesota vs. Buffalo Super Bowl someday!

  4. Sorry, Gellman. At least your Vikes were in it at this point. My "defending chumps" couldn't even get out of the starting gate.

  5. I never thought I would be going for the Vikings, but this year that was the case. To say I was disappointed by the way Favre played was an understatement. But the loss can't just be pinned on him - The Vikings lost as a team. The offense turned the ball over, the pass defense allowed 3 TDs and the run defense allowed New Orleans to run the ball when needed, and the special teams had problems with coverage.

  6. The refs gave the game to the Saints!! It's like they got more liberal with their calls in OT. They DID NOT get the first down on the fourth and inches, AS THE BALL CAME LOOSE!! And the, previously mentioned, Meachem catch WAS INCOMPLETE! Then the "ticky tack" call as well!! I don't even want to get into how many times they should have call penalities on the Saints D for hits on Favre(just goin by the NFL rulebook).

  7. FUCK!!!!! The last time the state of Minnesota had any of it's pro-sports teams in the championship of the given sport was 1991!! The last time the Vikings made the Superbowl was 1977, and they've managed to lose 4 while winning none. It's getting to be near impossible to root for Minnesota teams, a near 20-year drought is terrible.

  8. Ben -

Sorry dude, it's the other way around. The Vikings gave the game away to the Saints. Turnovers are killer . . .

Did you even read what I wrote? I was pointing out the OT. The last time I checked the Vikings did not turn the ball over in OT because they didn't have a chance to because of over overzealous liberal referee calls. They had 5 TO's and still got to OT. And their D CAME UP BIG only to be screwed on 3 maybe 4 HORRIBLE CALLS.

  10. My sympathies. I was amazed at the amount of fumbles by the Vikings in very critical situations and field position. This game should have never come down to a potential field goal opportunity at the end of regulation. The Vikings offense dominated all day, and it sucks the better of the 2 teams lost.

  11. Ben-

Here's an idea - Don't throw a f@#king interception when you're in field goal range with a minute plus to go in the 4th Qtr. Then you don't have to worry about bad calls in OT. Got it?

  13. I'm going to piss everyone off! so be it, yes the other players on the Vikings made a lot of mistakes huge mistakes. But in typical favre fashion throwing the ball downfield for no reason to get the glory whatever his motives are suspect and should be expected " hallmark". He's the leader he called the shots. Be pissed if you want I'm done with this guy for good. But I'm a seahawks fan so let the punishment begin. And the refs yeah that didn't work out to well when Seattle played the Steelers in the big game but ( anyone see that game? the calls? ) , I didn't blame the refs. my team played like shi*! Grant

  14. anyone else think Favre was a yearlong plant/practical joke by the Packers to give Vikings fans false hope?

  15. It sure would have been a painful practical joke to endure...

  16. The Saints are a bunch of "clowns", they hide behind the good story of Drew Brees and Katrina, but Gregg Williams said all that needs to be said about the Saints. There goal is to injure your QB! How do you get 0 Sacks and pretty much knock a QB out of a game?? When the Steelers and other Great D's knock a QB out of a game, they do it on talent and actually are strong enough to both sack and possibly injure a QB. On top of that, that was the WORST game Winning Drive in the history of football. Whether or not the Vikings deserved to win with 5 Turnovers is irrelevenat! That doesn't mean they deserved to deal with Refs and Head hunters that got in the way of a great game. The refs should have protected the players and let them decide the game.
