First Look: 2009 Topps Unique Football

When this stuff was first put out for baseball, I was definitely turned off by the horrible concept. Now that they have brought it to football with a few tweaks, its not as bad. The Brady card looks much better than its baseball counterpart, and the Namath doesnt look as awful as the tag card that was previewed a while ago on Wax Heaven. Im guessing its because the backgrounds look more finished, and the idea of what is trying to be presented looks more flushed out. However, the Mannings dual is typical Topps, and the Peterson and Roethlisberger look awful.

My thoughts are still that the namesake of this product doesnt really apply to the content, and that is going to be the problem. Its not really any different than what we get out of a lot of other products, so to call it "Unique" is a gross misnomer.

As long as it stays as a mid end set and doesnt stretch cost past the 100 dollar mark, it could be successful, mainly depending on whether or not the other cards are as boring as the baseball ones. With Topps, nothing is set until the product hits shelves.

EDIT: Just got word this product is going to run 140-180 a box. Holy fuck. Yeah, im out.

  1. Yeah, there are going to be a lot of awful elements to this set. Baseball does look worse though.

  2. This is essentially Topps Sterling with a new name and current players.

  3. As with baseball, we have already learned that all of those scans are the 1 per case hits. That being said, the baseball version is already being presold at $140-180 per box, and will contain mostly base and crappy low-end hits. I can't see the FB version being any different or better.

  4. The Roethlisberger looks horrible?? Awesome full logo. You have lost your mind. That card will sell for 400 plus and is a beauty. Set looks awesome!

  5. Not that it is competing, but I would take UD Black over this any day.

The only card worth looking at in that group is the Brady. And I have grown tired of Reebok stuff. But design-wise, it's pretty sharp.

The rest sucks. Especially the Manning dual. What is the point in including a one color mesh jersey piece in that card? If it isn't a patch, just skip it and give me bigger pictures.

    180 a box and we can't get on-card. Horrible.

  6. Wheeler, you are crazy. Its not all about the patches. Its about the look of the card and that one is a complete fucking bore.

  7. totally disagree! That card is awesome and love the design. I mean seriously what do you want a picture of the player doing for Gods sakes. Great job Topps!

  8. I just want to know who the card is of without having to take out a magnifying glass. For god's sake Wheeler!

At least for these jumbo swatches, the windows dont cut into the player pics. That is much better.

  9. A magnifying glass. Come on dude. the card in full size the players photo is very visible. The 1" pic on the sell sheet is not quite to scale.. I mean there you go again. Having to see the big pics of the players face, players body. Heaven forbid he had his helmet off. I mean the giant lettering of his name in the design at the top normally gives it away. Good Lord

  10. I dont buy cards to get giant patches, I buy for getting cool looking cards of my favorite PLAYERS. That means good action shots, more focus on the players themselves, and no gimmicks like this. To me this looks very boring, just focusing on the stupid giant patch rather than creating a good looking card.

  11. I do as well and part of a cool looking card to me is a nice patch. Seeing the player in action does nothing at all for me. I love the card, Nothing boring to me about at all. Why card companies can never be worried. It always 50/50 with collectors. One year you make the other half happy then the following year the other happy lol
