Fake Peterson Logo Patch On Ebay AGAIN

A few months ago, two Peterson Viking head exquisites were up on ebay at once, one was real per UD's brand manager, the other was fake with proof.

Some idiot bought it, probably found out it was fake, had it raw reviewed by Beckett for looks, and put it back up. Its a private listing so people cant email the high bidders, and this watery turd of a person is lucky that nothing has happened to him so far. Man, if I were buying a card THAT expensive, I may want to do some research. I am guessing some JC is at home with a drool covered keyboard, mumbling "PETERSON-JO, PETERSON-JO, PETERSON-JO" to himself over and over again as he hits the one click bid button. Unbelievable.

I am emailing UD, hopefully they will save some idiot lot of heartache.

  1. Yeah but why should this guy be out 1k if he bought it that way. I guess he should just throw it in the shitter. Yeah tell me if you bought it and found out then your wife laost here job it wouldn't be up. Reality check brother.. I blame the scum bags at UD for putting a product with no legit markings indicating logo. UD sucks

  2. Agree with wheeler, you are crazy if you expect someone to take the hit themselves.

  3. 1st- Yes Card Manufacturers should do a better job of producing a product that can't be counterfeited causing something like this to happen.

However, that does not mean that this guy should then create another victim just to minimize his victimhood. Does it suck that this guy is out 1K+. Yes. Does that mean that he who probably felt like crap when he found out it was fake (assuming he does know it is a fake), should then do it to someone else? No.

Some times we have to take a loss because we know we don't want another person to feel the same way. If you bought a car from a used car dealer that was a lemon and failed after the limited warranty? You have two options. Try and go after the person who sold you the car (which in that case would be harder to do then this case where the outright fraud is evident), fix it at your cost, or fix it and sell to another. What you can't do is then go and sell it to some other schmuck and advertise it as a good working car and get paid for it at that value.

This is why it is absolutely important for the buyer to be extremely cautious when purchasing cards like these. The risk is often to great for me.

I am most pissed at Beckett in this situation. If they truly were the #1 source in the hobby they would pay attention to something called message boards and the blogosphere and would have known that card #47/99 had been tampered with and was a fraud and would have refused to even raw grade it. However, they are not truly the #1 source because they can't even pay attention to the world of collecting even though that is what they are paid to do. I think a person should be able to go after "authenticator" or "graders" if they do something like this to a "tampered" card, there should be consequences for all involved in the chain of fraud. #1 in my book is the person selling the fraudelent card if they know it is. #2 is Beckett for even raw grading the card when months ago it was documented all over the internet as a fraud. Least culpable are the manufacturers because they really cannot control what is done on the secondary market although they could do a better job in preventing it by doing something like saying "Authentic Vikings Logo Patch" (something that wouldn't even need to be on the card but enclosed with one of those certificate of authenticity things they do with cards where they can't fit it on.

  4. Nevermind, Hitter beat me to it.

  5. Agree with HHitter and Gellman on this, so not going to beat a dead horse.

Another note though, doesn't UD have some type of service where you can send in a card like that while explaining the situation and they can rectify it in some manner? Whether it be a new patch from their Peterson File, or a new card or two? Seems like as long as they don't have a tamper-proof product, then they should offer some type of remedy for customers who unknowingly got cheated.

Also, does anybody disagree with putting the card up and advertising it as a Fake Patch? You wouldn't be lying to the public about its authenticity, and could possibly make back up some of the money seeing as how it is still a nice autograph. The problem I see here is that you can't ensure that the card won't be flipped a couple months later as legit. But how can you ever know know for sure that any card you sell isn't going to be tampered with later.

Just thought I would throw that out there. Discuss amongst yourselves.

  6. I think that putting it up as a fake is a good idea, because you would get some money for it, but still remain within the moral boudaries. Then, whoever buys it will put it back up and make more money. this card should be taken out of circulation, and should be replaced with a new one.

  7. Have at it Gellman, be the almighty and take it out of circualtion if you feel it is wrong LOL. You guys are nuts if you think you would just let it slide. Fact of the matter guy got jobbed so it is an endless cycle till Gellman steps in. Talking the talk is so much easier then walking the walk.. That is what you guys are doing in this case because you are not in his shoes. Man up if you feel so strongly on your opinion ;)Shoot maybe you 3 can all pinch in and divide the cost then relist it the fake way as suggested. That way the hit isn't felt. I will even be the 4th investor to help out with the operation..We all have no idea the guys situation. He could have 3 kids and invested in it then found out. So basically talk is cheap. I GIVE MY WORD I WILL PUT UP 1/4 OF THE COST IF YOU 3 DO..I can paypal it tonight..

  8. Wheeler, dude, what I was saying is that UD should take the card and replace it somehow. No matter what happens, the card will continue to make the rounds until someone does something about it.

As for me, I wouldnt put it up again if I was in his position. It isnt the right thing to do, which is what I think needs to be addressed here. I have every right to blast him, because he is scamming the person who buys this. Feel free to support him, but Im not going to agree with you.

And yes, I do realize that UD will never be able to do the above.

  9. Wheeler, I had to reject your last comment because the tag you used doesnt compute with blogger. Please use HTML format when posting a link, there are no pictures that can be posted. Just post the link.

  10. Wheeler, chill man. Nobody here is honestly going to buy this thing to make a point. So let's just drop that.

This goes back to the age old moral dilemma of whether or not it's okay to steal bread if it's to feed your family. Whether or not it was Gellmans intention to get into that, it's what has happened.

You can answer that question any way you feel. I really don't care, but to invalidate an opinion cause we don't know what shoes he is in is not an arguement.

The fact is that we know that it is fake, but we don't know for a fact that he knows. We can assume, and that is what Gellman is doing in his post. I agree with his assumption though based on a number of things.

One being that he is still buying cards. He has has feedback as of a week ago and it has been pretty steady. If he is at the point of feeding kids, then he wouldn't be buying other stuff.

Secondly, who 'invests' in a 8,000 card? Ain't no way you can get a good return on that. People who spend that king of dough are status collectors. Either they are a huge Peterson/Viking fan with money, or they are a huge collector with money. You don't have people making $30G a year buying those kinds of cards as short-term or long-term investment.

And lastly, if you look at his feedback, most of his auctions are private and when he screwed some guy over, he sent cash in payment instead of paypal. This tells me he cleans out his paypal account on a regular basis to protect himself.

I could be wrong about every one of these assumptions, but based on them, I can form an opinion. And in my opinion, this guy is sticking someone else with his mistake. And that is wrong. . . . in my opinion.

  11. I originally saw this on Ebay and sent Gellman an email on it because if it weren't for this site I could have been the victim... not that I have $1,000 to blow on a football card though.

Even if I had that kind of cash doesn't this guy think that people will do some research before trying to buy it? If he has it in a graded case why doesn't someone look up the serial number and find out if that checks out first. I don't own a single graded card but thought I would look it up anyway so if I missed something I apologize. From my findings I don't see a 2007 Exquisite Peterson Signature Patch graded 8.

This guy shouldn't get away with selling this card regardless of his circumstances. If he finds out its fake after he buys it he has to go back to who he bought it from and not continue the cycle. If he's an asshole, which it looks like he is, and lists it anyway, then with a graded card and all the resources of the internet whoever buys this thing is a total idiot.

  12. HH is right. I usually defend BGS, but apparently they are clueless enough to miss one of the most high profile fakes out there. Amazing.
