Taking Set Collecting To The EXTREME!

Sometimes, when second worlders take a shot at set collecting, they set their sights very high. Every once in a great while, someone takes that to a whole new level. This auction is for every RC Patch Auto out of 2007 Exquisite Football, and I am not only jealous, but really fucking impressed. Not only does he have the complete set, but he has some nice ass patches on most of the cards, including a ridiculous 3-color on the Peterson. Of course, these patches are event used, but for the sake of this showcase, they are really nice. He even got a 3 color on the Russell, which is tough, considering that the home half of the jerseys are 2 colors for the whole jersey, and the away jerseys are only three colors on the front and back numbers.

I can imagine that this set took a long time to complete, and also took a shit ton of money. The sad thing is that he wants 14K for this lot, and I dont think he will come even close. Its just too much money for someone to pay, as most of the RCs in this set will never amount to much. As a set, thats a little different, but that may be a lot too much to ask.

Either way, its cool to see a guy that took the time to complete his set.

  1. That is so flippin sweet. It puts the sterling gold set to shame for sure. But hey, I am totally the coolest in my neighborhood. Know this.

  2. No one is paying 15K for this. People need a reality check. It is sweet though.

  3. Yeah, EXTREME stupidity. The guy spent over $25,000 putting this set together and is now going to take a $10,000 bath or worse. I'm assuming he is selling it because of economic hardship and he needs money NOW! Here's a hint, maybe if you didn't drop over $25,000 on football cards a year ago you wouldn't be in a financial bind.

  4. Anon - chill. There is a lot of assuming going on there. Some people have so much money, that it's truly a game and the chase, not a make or break thing. This set to him could be like Topps Chrome to me.

You might be right, but it's just a thought.

  5. No, your're totally right. It's a total assumption on my part and by all measures this guy could be a gazillionaire. However, I put sets together as well (still working on a couple of high-end ones right now) and I would never invest so much time and money on a set just to turn around and sell it a year later for a major loss. It just doesn't make sense to me. That's why I think the guy could be in dire straits and needs the money immediately, even if it means he has to take a loss. Of course, there is a good chance that that is not the case at all.

  6. Anon - Congrats on being the first Anonymous commentor ever to actually respond to a comment! Kudos to you.

This guy probably does need to cash out. I was just bringing another thought to it. Another would be if he just did this every year and just uses whatever money he gets to help start the next set.

I don't know, but I think the real question is whether or not he would do better by selling individually. With those patches I would venture to say yes. You completely limit your potential customer base. Much easier to sell a Peterson to a Peterson Collector than sell a huge set like this. How many Exquisite Set collectors do you know in the market for this?

  7. I totally agree. I don't know many people who are Exquisite set collectors. There are some really nice rookie patches in that set, but there are only 4-5 players' cards in that set that I would care to own and I or any other collector could get them individually for a lot cheaper. It does seem that the seller would have better success selling some of the better cards individually.
