Its Funny Because Its True...

From GraphJam, I think its a really funny graph, mainly because its so true. I remember back when Magic cards were first released, and how little interest I had in them. I couldnt understand why people were actually throwing down thousands on them, considering the fact that it was a game rather than a collectible. Magic cards have since blended the two worlds and brought about some of the most valuable gaming cards EVER. The funny thing is, that back when I was a kid, I shunned Magic cards for the obvious "better" investment in baseball cards. Of course that was completely stupid, as the Magic cards from that era are worth thousands, and my 1987 donruss set is worth less than the cardboard it was printed on.

Moral of the story: never underestimate the power of nerds when combined with collectability.

As a self proclaimed nerd in many definitions of the word, this should be gospel to all.

  1. Preach it! I did the same thing, passing on Magic cards (what a waste... that'll never catch on... who would spend the money...). Yeap... Sometimes I wonder just who was stupid...

  2. They may be worth a lot more than sports cards, they may be raking in thousands by selling them. I couldn't care less. Magic cards have no value to me. I was going to say I'd give them to my dog as chew toys, but that would imply that they somehow found their way into my house, and that's not gonna happen. ... But your second-to-last graf: so true.

  3. Its like Dungeons and Dragons 1993 edition. It caught on with so many people, that they just gained value from that fact alone. I have recently found out that there are so many rules and types of the game that it would take me years to figure it out.

  4. I remember my friend telling me that Magic was going to be big, I laughed. I would spend hundreds of dollars on baseball and he would by boxes of the 1st 2nd series of the magic. He drives a porshe now, he once sold a sealed box for 8500.00

  5. I don't think magic cards is one bit nerdier than sports cards, at least not from an outside perspective.

  6. I have a huge stack of Magic cards burried in a drawer somewhere from a long time back. I guess it might be time to dig them out and sell them off.

  7. Along with collecting sports cards, I also read a lot of comic books, so I feel I can help bridge the "nerd divide" if possible.

I once considered collecting Magic cards solely for the art they contain, which is in many cases very impressive. However, I don't really have the time, space or inclination to own enough cards to try and play the game, so I'd only be getting about half my investment out of any purchase.

Of course, like I said, I like the art more than the cards (I've always liked classic Diamond Kings for the same reasons), so it's not solely about investment. And ultimately, I'm a set collector (sorry, Gellman), which makes collecting a set of Magic cards (especially the early versions) very difficult when zealous gamer-nerds are constantly attempting to upgrade their "killer" deck.

I'll just be content to sit on my vast collection of near-worthless early-1990s baseball and football cards, in the hopes that someday before I die they might become valuable for nostalgia purposes. Sigh...
