Its Election Day, So I Am REQUIRED To Go Off Topic

Yes, we all know its election day, and yes, I definitely think it is a no-brainer to vote. I have been an "undecided" only because I couldnt decide to vote against Sarah Palin or for Barack Obama. When I walked into the polling place today, I had a lot of time to think (with the ridiculously long line). I eventually decided to vote against Sarah Palin because I liked both candidates.

Im not going to hop back on my soap box and preach why you should vote for Obama, but I will tell you why I voted against Palin. The woman is the devil, and with McCain's age, bouts with cancer, possible war injury complications, she could easily be president some time in the next four years. That is fucking scary, and I couldnt let my searing hatred boil for 4 whole years.

Comment all you want about how you think that is a bad reason to vote for someone, but really its the only reason in my mind when I can identify with both candidates. I like Obama on the social issues and health care, I like McCain on taxes and defense. The thing is that McCain's plusses are all negated by the fact that I hate Sarah Palin on every fucking thing she says and does. I cant listen to her talk anymore, and I am from Minnesota! She is that fucking annoying!

So go vote, and comment here about all my mistakes I made in this post. Really it doesnt matter to me as long as your ballot gets in the box.

  1. I agree with you 100%, my vote went to Obama because Palin is an idiot. I don't agree with everything Barrak says and I don't disagree with things McCain says, but by setting Palin up as his number two, he lost my vote. I see her as nothing more than a former beauty queen, reading speeches prepared carefully for her and never being able to think for herself. McCain would have made a good president, but not without a solid number 2.

  2. Wow, the same guy who coined the phrase "Joe Collector" and consistently bitches about collectors being mindless lemmings votes for the race baiting, class warfare candidate.

The same guy who makes such a big deal out of the supposed corruption at Beckett votes for the candidate with close ties to radicals crooks and terrorists like Alynsky, Ayers, Wright, ACORN, Rezko, Dohrn, Davis, Khalidi, Pfleger, and Fairey.

The same guy who trashes Beckett for a lack of transparency votes for the most secretive, evasive candidate in history.

It's a shame that you demand more from your hobby than you do from your leaders. You just cut off your nose to spite your face.

  3. Amen, Brother Gellman.

I am more pro-Obama than anti-Palin, but I'll be honest. The Democrats would have had to nominate a picnic basket for me to vote for McCain.
Also, here in Michigan, I was honored to be able to vote Yes on Prop 2 - "Proposal 2008-02: A proposed constitutional amendment to permit with certain limitations stem cell research in Michigan."
You can find the full question many places online.
There were a ton of yard signs saying Vote No on 2 and 2 Goes 2 Far. I was proud of myself for resisting the urge to knock on their door and ask, "So, why do you want to not help save my life?" I am also a Type 1 diabetic.
    Thanks for voting.

  4. Sonic, I can vote on all the crap the media throws at these candidate, but really its about who I feel can better lead this country. I like both the Presidential Candidates for different reasons, but I CANT STAND Palin. I would still vote democratic with her on the ticket even with a picnic basket. She is worse than any situation the candidates can bring with past involvement.

  5. I wish I could pretend that I didn't read this post, but I did. I just with I could better understand the logic now that I read it.

So you agree with McCain on the 2 biggest issues which are "taxes" (economy), and "defense" (war, terrorism). And agree with Obama on "social issues and healthcare". I can not possibly see how those are equal. If we are all broke and being attacked by suicide bombers, do we really think that gay marriage matters? As far as healthcare goes, every major industry that the government runs goes under and corrupt. Just look at the housing industry with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. What makes us think that healthcare will be different? Every, EVERY major country that has government healthcare is riddled with problems like long lines, long waits and poor, poor care. Not even to mention that this country already offers 'free' healthcare, because anyone who goes to the hospital must be seen regardless of insurance or money. The rest of us pay for that with our high premiums.

And about Palin. I am not the biggest fan, but to say that she doesn't have any experience doesn't fly. You can say that she doesn't have as much experience as you would like. But she is the Governer of a state. That in itself offers more executive experience than anything that Obama has ever done in his life. Obama has literally worked as a lawyer for Acorn, sat on a board and state senate. That's it. Plus, he is running for the President, not Veep.

And who writes their own speeches? No candidate since Reagan has written his own speech and even he had help. It ain't like Obama writes his speeches. Have you ever seen him off the teleprompter? He fumbles like you or I would. Besides, I would much rather hire someone that has a team writing speeches for them, the content of which I agree with, than to hire a guy who has a team writing speeches for them that I don't agree with.

And what is this talk about McCain dying? He has released the most comprehensive medical files of any candidate in the race. War injuries? Those are evident in his arms and shoulders, but no life threatening. Who hasn't released their medical records? And who was a chronic smoker until a couple years ago? And who admits to using drugs in his past? That's right, Obama. He released a one page "clearance" letter that basically said that his doctor thinks he is healthy. If we were really worried about the health of the candidates, then we would be demanding the comprehensive medical records of Obama, whose smoking and past offer a higher risk of illness than that of McCains. But we don't demand that, because it is a false issue.

Anyway, I write this knowing that I am probably going to be stoned (in the Old Testament way). But I am not going to let this be a one-sided thread. But isn't that what makes our country so great? That we can have these discussions freely? Well, that is as long as you are not flying on Obama's plane.

  6. Also, anyone who stands against stem cell research is automatically on my shit list. Please tell me why it is important to protect cells that have no exisitence rather than helping me, my future children, and actual people with personalities and families. Diabetes is a leading cause of death because of the complications it causes. Heart Disease, Hypertension, Stroke, and MIs are all bad things that happen. Tell a woman that you voted against research for her child because of your belief that stem cells should be thrown away rather than used. Fuck that.

  7. As far as stem cells go, Gellman, I am not goint to pretend to understand how if feels to be in your shoes. So I am not going to try. But when I visited the Diabetes Research Center at the University of Miami, I spoke personally with the lead stem cell researcher there. They received the first batch of embryonic stem cells years ago before it became a political issue. He told me that they never again need more stem cells because those same embryonic stem cells can reproduce. So they are constantly refilling their own suppy. So it's not an issue of how to harvest more.

The issue seems to be about money, because their is a Federal Ban on money for stem cell research. But this is just a federal ban, not a public one. So anybody that wants to use private money to help fund the research may do so.

Something tells me that if we can find 600 million dollars to spend on one side of a presidential campaign in the middle of a economic downturn, then we can probably fund it on a private level without worrying about taxpayer money.

The company I work for gives more money than any other entity on earth for diabetes other than the federal government. Much of that money goes to stem cell research. Something tells me that if we could find other companies to spend as much, then the government aspect would be a non-issue.

    Just my 2 cents.

  8. Why shouldnt the government help the 20% of the population who have diabetes or pre-diabetes and the 60-70% of the population who will encounter problems with diseases that can be helped with this type of research? I think thats a pretty good investment. Fuck buying those $400 trash cans for the pentagon, lets use it for something worthwhile.

  9. "...anyone who stands against stem cell research is automatically on my shit list."

I second that sir. The disturbing part of this election is that neither candidate has even attempted to approach the issues of science (unless it's abortion) or technology. I saw Obama speak and he at least talked about broadband infrastructure.

Both candidates have failed on many levels in addressing things that are important to younger generations, but at least Obama has the good sense to recognize we exist. He got my vote.

  10. Saved American, thank you for your support of the blog, I definitely appreciate it, but I am not going to add any more fuel to this fire by posting anyone's specific views on really controversial topics anymore.

Feel free to continue in the conversation, but no more explicit discussion starters. Thanks!

  11. No problem. Honestly, I wasn't trying to start a fire, jsut stating why I personally voted the way I did.

  12. Great post Gellman, agree with you on every point. I'm not an American, but if I lived in America I would never have voted for McCain just because of Palin. I'm not saying I would have voted McCain without Palin over Obama, but I'd take just about anyone over Palin.

Also I agree 100% on the topic of stam cell research. It's imperative in the hunt for cures to just about any disease out there.

How you can trust McCain on economy and war is beyond me, he supported Bus in just about everything he did. And Bush didn't make a whole lost of correct decisions, imo.

    cheers and let Obama win!

  13. Either way nothing really changes. We still get screwed by either party.

  14. I for one am deeply offended by someone having an opinion other than my own. I will never read this blog again . . . . until the next post. And then I will again be lost in the ever-important hobby that I love. . . . kittens. Wait, wrong blog.

  15. It's your blog and you can post whatever you want on it. But, I know you know this of course, posting/talking about politics can get things into a shit storm real quick. Political subjects hit people down to the littlest nerves. Can't say you haven't kept up the spirit of the blog, totally uncensored.:P

  16. Gellman:

It was closer than I thought it'd be, but Prop 2 passed in Michigan. It was about 52%-48%, last count I saw was about 2.14 million votes yes, to 1.94 million votes no. Pretty happy about that this morning.

  17. I dont know much about prop 2 in MI, but if its a victory, its a victory. Hopefully research will now be able to get more grant money with a Dem in office and a Dem congress.

  18. Matt:

I'm from Michigan as well and could never understand those 2 Goes 2 Far signs. As far as the law is concerned, the stems cells would only come from in-vitro fetuses that would be thrown out anyway.
