Beckett Doesnt Learn

Not only am I sick to my stomach from the awful camera work in this video (J'isthat Youma must have been fired), but also from the fact that this shit is still happening regularly. Again Beckett gets two boxes before the release date, and I still wonder why manufacturers give them the products despite knowing that collectors are extremely fucking angry that it happens. I posed a question to Scott Prusha during my interview, but he included it in the questions he couldnt answer. Scott, I must say, I am disappointed that this is still being allowed by you.

I am also disappointed by how much swag they accumulate around their offices. For a magazine that (wrongly) sets the price for cards in circulation, accepting gifts from manufacturers is a terrible conflict of interest. The fact that there arent any other people taking this issue head on, makes me a little concerned as to the type of people that collect these days. I mean, this hobby is full of scams, top to bottom, and the most public face in the industry is a walking contradiction to everything we love.

Funny enough, bad comments are starting to show up on the video and I encourage that to continue. Hopefully with a little work, the collecting base can make sure that this stops, for the love of what you hold dear. For those of who doubt that Beckett isnt a cancer on this industry, you are walking around with blinders on. If they were to go out of business tomorrow, the hobby would be a better place - no doubt about it.

Also, because I know for a fact that people from UD, DLP and Beckett all read this blog, feel free to drop me an email and explain to me what is being done to stop these beckett box breaking assclowns from carrying on with their pathetic existence.

  1. That video caused me to lose several IQ points along with my lunch. Somebody pass the dramamine.

  2. Gellman, I love reading your blog, but the Beckett assclownery is never going to stop. The reason why DLP and UD aren't going to do anything is because they get mad exposure in Beckett magazines and on Beckett.com.

While things like this piss off inteligent collectors, a group in which I include you and I, your average know nothing, has more money than the Vatican prospector/collector, sees these videos and runs right out to try and cash in. They don't read blogs. They don't think for themselves, and form their own opinions. And they don't have to rationalize what they're spending to pull one good card a year, because they don't have to.

Sad, but I've come to terms with it, and I continue to enjoy collecting in my own way. If I never open another product made after 2007, I will still be perfectly happy collecting Dawson cards, and opening older wax.

  3. I can't wait for their advance break of Classics. I hear they're going to do it in the Beckett men's room.

  5. Gellman I'm surprised by you. Are you actually saying that you are just beginning to wonder about today's "collectors"?

I just got back into this hobby in early May and I've known since about day 5 that this hobby is fucked. Now you can either accept it or you can bitch about it but you can't stop. The money is with the manufacturers and meatheads.

And by the way, you should know that Hackler's office is in the ladies room.

  6. I dont think the hobby is necessarily fucked, as long as people continue to remove their stupid blindfolds that are perpetrated by people like Beckett. Blogs are a good way to do that, as well as the message boards. It will never be a complete victory, but at least it wont be total loss either.

  7. I'm beginning to think Beckett monitors this blog and then after seeing a post about them, releases another stupid video on youtube.

  8. Heh, I was going to post something on TheFootballCardBlog when I saw the advanced message about the box break (until I saw that I was a day late--the break had already been posted), wondering what you would do when you saw that your favorite DLP was in a box break.

I really can't believe that seeing a Beckett box break really causes anyone to go buy something, though--at least I hope not.

And the funniest thing is, they do such a poor job of showing off the cards that they do get, since they try to be all funny and creative.

  9. i thought the mishap captured at the end of the video was a perfect visual metaphor for the casual disregard that beckett wreaks upon the hobby. absolute douchebaggery.

  10. I'm glad someone besides me rants about the new Beckett. Back in the mid 80s I sued to use a guide called CCP (Current Card Prices). It was an ugly newspaper type guide, but it didn't try to pump up sets. It had real movement of cards. In truth the only company that should be setting the prices is eBay. If they put out a publication of card auctions I get that in a second.

  11. I don't get them. You'd think after the crap they took from their previous "random" box breaks they'd change their ways. Let other collector's open them and discuss the cards, and buy them off the shelf. It's just another example of them not being a leader in the industry like they should be.

Sad when a magazine that is designed to "reflect" the card community seems to be ignoring it here.
