A GREAT Example of Why Hard Signed Cards Are FREAKING AWESOME

Just got these preview card pics out of 2009 Ultimate Football from Upper Deck. The set is being released in early december, and I cant wait. After seeing these cards, I have much more confidence that Ultimate should be as good as last year's great product.

Of course, here are some impressions I got.

I love the personal touch cards which are based off the USA baseball ones from last year. Those cards were extremely popular, and these should be too. Also, I fucking love that Aaron Curry wrote Batman as the answer to that question instead of Jesus or some shit like that. Shows that he is definitely in the right frame of mind, right? One other thing, anyone questioning why Mike Fucking Epps is Shonn Greene's favorite actor? Haha, too funny.

Secondly, I really like the 1997 Legends cards, but the autos are a little streaky a la Panini. That kind of sucks.

Lastly, the college shout out cards are really cool, and should be pretty sought after. I have a feeling that the Pettigrew is just one of many cards like that, as Gregg told me a while back that inscriptions are the new on card auto project to make their brand stand out. I love it.

Ultimate should have some pretty awesome shit, if these are any indication. Glad to see they are stepping it up.

  1. Those are cool til you get stuck with a quad jersey for 90$ just like last years ultimate.

  2. UD are really scraping the bottom of the barrel with those 97 Legends autos....

Kind of like they've been doing with guest bloggers on their site....

  3. These are only three of the legends included. I believe Favre, Marino and Green are also part of this set, if not more. Either way, I dont think many of us are concerned with the strength of this checklist.

I just love your comments. So compelling and rich.

  4. The inscription autos look kick ass! Hopefully they dont have so many quad jerseys in this product this year. And the legend autos look good...and what is wrong with andre reed, tim brown, those two are legends...

  6. ThosePersonal touch cards are the gayest thing I have ever seen. I mean holy hell what is next? Once you wander outside the realm of sports I become not interested. Those sre great for the stalkers and obsessed. I would rather have what UD did before with inscriptions like dates when 1st start made, Favortie football moment draft rnd and place etc.Like I want " Fried Chicken" and " Batman" on my card. Guess those are for the guys that have a little too much man love for there players.

  8. Real quick as well. I contacted a source inside UD. Rumor is those persoanl touch on the are not signed always signed by the athelete. They are put on there in advance
    Just food for thought.

  10. What do you think he will say LOL. I bet it will go like this. Can I pour you a cup of Kool-aid before I answer..
For real Gellman my source has never failed me even when I was on outside the lines on ESPN. I will give him just enough rope ;)

  11. Per Gregg, these are all signed by the players completely. I dont know where your source gets his info from for these, but I have to agree with Gregg here, the handwriting looks right on all.

  12. It's generally impossible to verify someone's handwriting based on their signature. Even the slant, which is normally a dead give away because it reflects the way someone holds a pen, changes from signature to hand-writing.

Either way, I'm glad to see that Upper Deck has made -- what, 150? -- good cards and inserted them into boxes.

I'm sure the expected value on these boxes is in the 40 dollar range.

If the entire checklist and numbering gets released, someone should do a quick expected value calculation.
