Panini Continues To Fail At Hard Signed Cards

A few weeks ago, Panini announced that they would be going back to hard signed cards for 2009 Playoff Contenders. A few minutes ago, we saw the results of their ventures. Needless to say, ill let the pictures speak for themselves.

From the looks of the cards, we are still going to be getting mirrored-boarded abominations, even though they are NOTORIOUS for being impossible to sign on. Even if the cards turn out to be on normal card stock, the pens they used look like borderline ballpoints. Bubbly ink, lack of fluidity, everything one would expect from a fucking amateur.

On top of this, you get a design where the words 2009 ROOKIE invades your view, and provides absolutely no place for a player to sign without hiding the sig among the gigantor letters.

Total and epic FAIL.

The Fake Rookie Premiere Autos Have Not Gone Away

Let me say this straight out. Just because I havent posted on the blatantly fake rookie premiere autos in a while, does not mean they have gone away. If anything, Burge and company have gotten better at them. Practice makes perfect right? Although there are still close to 200 of each card floating around with the bad, bad, horrible fake autos on them, the band of thieves has adapted a little to change it up.

Here is a recent fake:

Please tell me how someone with an untrained eye could pick that up as a fake. It looks 100 times better than the five year old with a crayon from before, and has now made it practically impossible to identify for a collector that doesnt know what they are doing.

Here is another (different seller), a quad:

I can say with 100% certainty that this is completely fake. However, the auto styles have changed slightly, and the Calvin Johnson sig almost looks passable. As for the Peterson, it looks exactly the same as the one above, and the Lynch is still ridiculous looking. The Ginn isnt bad, but it isnt good either.

Personally, I think its puzzling how these cards got into the hands of the sellers. Some have suggested that they get blues and wipe off the sigs to replace them with reds. Others are saying they are stolen from Topps, or that someone on the inside is passing them to the fakers. After seeing the Harvin I posted about before, it wouldnt surprise me either way.

Listen. Its pretty simple. If you are at all uncertain about the rookie premiere you are buying, DONT FUCKING BUY IT. Find one that looks good compared to others that are graded, and always let the doubt in your mind back you out of a sale. They prey on unsuspecting people, and from what has been circulating around the net, Burge has made a small fortune on these cards.

Lastly, if you have any questions, just email me at the link on the right. Ill be happy to help in any way I can.

Tiger/LeBron Dual Auto Pulled on FCB

I am one of the people who thinks 09-10 Exquisite is an amazing product due to the cards you can pull. Although the box breaks have been craptacular for people who have risked their money, some of the cards are absolutely ridiculous. Thems the breaks, literally.

One of the FCB users broke two cases and came away with a few great cards, including one of the most valuable modern cards ever produced. Not only is it multicolored patches from two of the most expensive players you can pull, but it is also inscribed by both. Could possibly break the 10,000 dollar value ceiling that is usually present on modern cards if he puts it on eBay.

Rookie Battle Royale: Week 6

Just another week in paradise, right? A lot of action and a few upsets, as well as a few top rookies coming back down to earth. I was pretty much glued to my computer during the afternoon, watching all of my fantasy teams getting killed by the Patriots players, Ray Rice, and MJD respectively. I had fun, and here are some updates on the rookies as usual.

Mark Sanchez

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Sanchez throws a whole hand's worth of interceptions, and the Jets lose to a Bills team that lost to Cleveland. Just an absolutely awful game for Dirty, and im sure a few of his cards could reflect what happened. However, as with any rookie QB, it’s a week to week thing with success, so I wouldn’t necessarily give up on his stuff quite yet.

Matt Stafford

Stafford sat for the second straight week, and Lions fans got a glimpse of what it would be like if he had surgery to repair his knee. The Lions, who were hungry weeks earlier, were made fools of by the Packers who actually left more than a few points on the field. It could have been worse. That is scary to think.

Hakeem Nicks

Even though Hakeem Nicks had a great game, the Giants did not. He went for over 100 yards AND a score, even though it was late in the game when the Saints already had it wrapped up. Either way, he had 2 long catches, and had a game worthy of putting him at the top of the discussion for rookie WRs of the year.

Jeremy Maclin

I knew it was too good to be true last week, but barring my better judgement, I still started him in fantasy due to lack of options. He was playing Oakland and I thought I could get 50 yards out of him. Sadly, the Raiders decided they were going to play the game of their lives and upset a VERY good Eagles team. Maclin was pretty much shut out, and went from the game of the year, to the bottom.

Percy Harvin

Harvin had a bad shoulder coming into the game, and left in the second half with an injury. There havent been any updates, but Im guessing he wont be playing for a few weeks. Too bad, as I think he added a great element to the Vikings offense.

Mohammed Massaquoi

He showed once again that he is the only thing the Browns have going for them. He caught 5 balls for 83, against one of the best defenses in the league, so I guess that should count for something. Didn’t really help the Browns come away with a victory and huge upset, but he did his job, unlike the rest of the offense.

Johnny Knox

I cant believe Knox walked away with another score against the falcons. He is definitely this year's Matt Forte, who oddly enough has been doing just mediocre. The Bears lost, but Knox showed that he is also right up there with Nicks at the top of the pile. So far, he has had 17 for 224 and 3 TDs, which is tied for the lead among rookies with Nicks. He also had the KR TD as well, which puts him at the top for total TDs.

The Rookie Graveyard

Darrius Heyward-Bey - Still nothing, still a bad QB, but at least they won.
Beanie Wells - Even though the Cardinals were ahead the whole game, he didn’t get anything done.
Brandon Pettigrew - See above, horrid QB, but he was shut out. Injury related?
Michael Crabtree - Will make debut next week, will remain here I believe.

Another Squeaker Gives The Vikings a 6-0 Record

Another game that left me standing in front of my TV with hands clasped in prayer. For the second time this season, the football gods smiled upon the Vikings, giving them another victory to add to their resume. Despite the win and beign considerably impressed with Joseph Fucking Flacco and Raymond Ridiculous Rice, I was as disappointed with the Vikings defense. They should have won this game by a lot more than they did, but instead came away with a victory they didnt deserve.

Brett Favre

I am beyond fucking sick of listening to the announcers talk about Brett Favre. I can only imagine how Yankee fans feel about TBS/everyones coverage of Derek Jeter for the last 40 years. Its just fucking annoying to hear them give dick ass platitudes about how much fun he is having, rather than actually talking about interesting parts of an awesome game. Favre did play well again, but this game was not about him. Of course that didnt stop Dan Dierdorf from giving him a relative verbal ass fucking of wonderful tidbits. Shut up.

Adrian Peterson

Glad to see Peterson get a good game under his belt again after failing to break the 100 yard mark for the previous four games. He played in typical AD fashion, grinding out close to 150 yards on the ground against a defense that is known for being rough and tumble. The problem was that he may have sustained an ankle injury that could get worse as the week moves on towards the game at Pittsburgh.

Ray Rice

Ray Rice looked like Adrian Peterson today. He was the bane of the Vikings D the whole game, and just had a ridiculous performance. 2 TDs on the ground, and 10 receptions for 100+ in the air. Unbelievable. I never really put that much faith in Rice after the first half, as he was practically unheard from. I feel bad for the AFC East having to play against him and Flacco together for the next decade, as they are going to be GREAT.

Joe Flacco

This was Flacco's day, even though the announcers had brown tongues from licking Favre's ass. Flacco tore apart a Vikings secondary in the second half, just making Cedric Griffin and Karl Paymah look foolish. Granted, he didnt have to deal with Winfield all day, but he still looked like he was the next golden dick for the announcers to suck.

CBS Football

If I never watch another game on CBS, it would be too soon. Everything about the whole game was horrible. Greg Gumble is annoying, Dierdorf was a gargantuan mouth breathing idiot, and the stuff they talked about made me mute the volume at more than one point. When I saw that CBS was doing the Super Bowl this year, a little part of me died. Seriously, CBS football fucking blows.

Percy Harvin

He looked bad on that injury, makes me worried for him. I am crossing my fingers that it isnt a separated shoulder. That would be BAD.

Antoine Winfield and Benny Sapp

For the ENTIRE fucking game, the announcers failed to tell us why Karl Paymah was playing corner. Not one fucking peep. Winfield actually had turf toe that kept him out of the game, and Sapp had a concussion on the opening kick off. Im sure Griffin shit his pants when he saw he would be the guy, especially with ass fuck Madieu Williams and his flailing arm tackles playing behind him. I guarantee that the Vikings go after a corner in the next draft, because, holy fuck, they need one after seeing the poor play. Griffin was never very good, and their safeties are looking VERY vulnerable. Im dreading next week, because if Winfield doesnt play, the Steelers could put up 60 points. Its that urgent.

Sidney Rice

I love Sidney Rice. What a fucking baller, right? The guy just makes play after play, and may be soon replacing Berrian at the one spot. On top of all of his ridiculous catches, Favre loves him, which means he should continue to have a great season.

Visanthe Shiancoe

Im actually shocked how poorly I talked about him last year, because he is playing like a TE god. Another great game, another Vikings win. Love the way he does what he does. What do you have to say about him Dan Dierdorf? "Shiancoe is just a big target. Favre is just having a ton of fun and is having a fun time throwing to this fun guy. I wish I were out there having fun, too."

I know it seems like I am talking about a loss here, and thats because it should have ended that way. To have a defensive collapse like that is beyond frustrating. They need to pick up their shit or they are going to get killed. Bottom line.

Product Review: 2009 Donruss Certified Football

After seeing the preview for Donruss Certified, I could not believe how much of a cop out Panini had gone with in terms of the design. They had basically taken the 2008 design (which wasn’t good to begin with) and updated it with minor tweaks. Now that I am seeing the finished product, it has improved over the sell sheet, but still has the look and feel of an inferior 2008 product.

Design/Creativity

There are parts of this set that are vastly improved over the previous years, and others that are lower or exacly the same. For that reason, I cant give Panini that much credit. There are so many similar cards between 2008 and 2009, that it takes away from the general feel of the set. If you look back at the 2008 set, it was full of junk, floating swatch windows, stupid looking subsets, millions of parallels. This year, many of the floating windows are gone, but the Parallels are still there, and the subsets still look pretty bad. Panini, as if anyone expected anything less, chose foilboard again for their production, which led to a number of warped, chipped and damaged cards in the boxes I got to see.

The highlight of this set is the Fabric of the Game single cards, which are definitely cool looking. They feature team color elements, and the diecuts arent bad. One of the diecuts, the team name logos, looks ridiculously cool mainly because they went with the spelled out name rather than the helmet decal cutout. It looks much better that way, and really completes the design. The others, especially the autos look MUCH better than last year, and you can see why this is the most collected part of the product each year.

The other focus of many collectors are the Freshman Fabric cards, which pretty much look like carbon copies of 2008, unfortunately. On the triples and quads, I am still confused as to why they put the windows where they did, as it looks like there is an Asteroids type swatch window squadron that is attacking the player at the top. The biggest improvements are the dual swatch autos, which went from horrible looking jersey/football cards, to cool looking dual jerseys. Im completely serious when I say that last year's Mirror Reds may have been the worst looking cards of the year behind Topps Lettermen. This year, they don’t break any part of the borders with the swatch windows, and they actually look like they were designed correctly. They are still sticker autos, but for the first time in a long time, they look better than SPX.

As for the rest of the set, there is a lot of crap to accompany the good parts. The souveneir stamps are back, and continue to be one of the dumbest ideas in any card product for the year. It would be one thing if the stamps were actually collectible, and were put in HOFer cards to match the years, but when you do stamps from fucking stamps.com, there is a big fucking problem. On top of all of that, the autos NEVER fit very well onto the cards, and yet, year after year, the cards are back. The design is not updated, ever, and the cards are just boring motherfucking poop.

Another huge problem is the base set, and those subsets that are derived from it. I have no idea why, but every single player's head is chopped off. I guess it was to make the players look larger than the cards themselves, but instead it looks like 40% of the whole product was cut wrong. You have a whole fucking base card, get the whole goddamn head in there.

The other subsets arent much better, as every card has about 20 parallels, jersey, auto and other, and really it just gets overwhelming and useless. Panini is continuing to think that subsets with parallels are the answer to everything, when really they just add fluff to a set that could use some actual meat.

Autograph Cards

The autograph cards in this set range from great to shitty and lots in between. There is no consistency, and when one card looks amazing, there are others that look like a five year old put them together.

I really like the autographed Fabric of the Game cards, as even with a sticker, they look cool. The cards don’t look horribly unbalanced, and the layout is pretty much correct. The team color design and the layout of all the different swatches works really well, and its not on FOIL! YES!

As said above, the base freshman fabric dual jersey autos are great, but they are the only good version of the cards, as well as being the only updated version of the cards. The others, as shown a few weeks ago, look exactly the same. If you are going to copy an old card, you have to make sure it was good to begin with. The 2008 versions were awful, and yet we get no new version. Too bad.

When you get to the Immortal Signature cards, you have some of the most packed designs I have seen in a long time. They make the jumbo swatch auto RPM cards from absolute look empty. Not only do they have a swatch, a sticker and a giant player with half a head, but they also have IMMORTALS scrawled across the whole thing. It just looks disgusting.

Overall, it’s the first Panini set that looks like it is improving in terms of creating auto cards, but they are a LOOOONNNNGGG way from producing on the level of Topps and Upper Deck.

Relic Cards

There are a few good relic cards and a few bad relic cards in this set, but considering that every single card in the set has a jersey parallel, it gets to be too much.

First are the Freshman Fabric cards that are only jerseys. One is a high numbered swatch or patch, the other is the 1/1 mirror black logo. Both look good for a no-auto swatch card, and I am liking the logo cards in the context of the Frosh Fab design. The big jersey cards look SO much better than the 2008 version, and I credit it solely to the way the window is cut. At least for this design, the player doesn’t have to be huge to look good, and they don’t look covered up like they did in absolute's crapfest.

The single fabric of the game jersey cards are great, and live up to the general feel of the previous years of the product. As I said before the team name logo cards are beyond cool, and even the single swatches don’t look awful.

Moving on to the dual and up versions of the fabric of the game cards, they look as awful as the other Panini cards this year. They are busy, loud, and just look like total crap. They tried to go in the completely wrong direction, and the cards look like modernized Zubaz pants as a result. In all truthfulness, the plain swatch card has become completely obsolete, and when you see a card like these, it just screams that Panini has no fucking clue what is going on.

As for the subset jersey cards like the base parallel, Immortals, and Certified potential, they are all amost stereotypical. You could put these cards in front of me with a mock up line up with UD and Topps cards and I wouldn’t even have to breathe before telling you they were Panini's. They are a complete snooze, and the new way Panini is cutting their plain swatches is getting fucking annoying. Enough with this shit already.

Value To The Collector

Im not really sure what direction to go with this product. The product features some cards that will be extremely valuable and highly collected, but also a good portion of stuff that will just blur together with the rest of their releases from 2008 and 2009.

I think that anything that has a logo on it will sell, as evidenced by the Mirror Blacks of previous years, but outside of the low numbered parallels, it’s a complete crap shoot. The good thing is that a box will probably not run you more than 75 bucks after the first few weeks, and from what it looks like, they have pretty good value in them with more than 1 auto in most cases.

>

The problem with everything Panini, including Certified, is that the formula is stale and over done. Boxes filled with worthless and poorly designed swatches among sticker autos that have no place. For that reason, this product will fall, and that could affect value in the long run.

Rating =

Overall Impressions

Certified is, in my opinion, the best Panini release so far, but that isnt saying much. Panini is obviously focusing on basketball, and from that, the football side of things is continuing to suffer. There was no heart in this product, instead being a rehash of a sub-par release from 2008. There are slight improvements, but overall, like most Panini products in 2009, it falls continually short on fronts that they always have problems with.

As of now, it’s pretty sad to see that so many of my favorite products have tanked in terms of design and feel, thus solidifying that I am going to save my money for perennial good buys like Chrome, SPA, and others.

First Favre Certified Vikings Auto Hits Ebay

The first of the Favre autos is up right now, and the seller wants a shitload. So, Panini gets the first shot in, but there are only a few other than this, and its a sticker. It doesnt look awful, minus the top of his head, but they sure created a huge hullabaloo over a sticker auto on a few cards.
