Sometimes Things Just Fall Into Place...

Earlier this week, my comissions came through from work and I found myself with a few extra dollars. Thanks to good work performances, I got an extra $500 amex gift card due to my winning a contest, which has provided me with an opportunity to get some cards I was eyeing. I wanted to get a Peterson SPA, but due to eBay gift card policies, I was only able to get a $200 card with the amex, leaving $300 to use at my disposal other places online.

First, I wanted to use part of the money to get some wax that I knew I would never spend actual money on. So, I bought 2 boxes of 2008 SPA, a product I was not able to buy at release because of lack of disposable income. Blowout will be shipping them to me, and I will be breaking them here next week. Then, I went to the local shop and spent the other 100 on a box of Philadelphia and a few cards I had won on the auction board. Per my usual luck I pulled a Mario Williams auto and two crap jerseys that I gave to a fan at the store.

With the other 200 I had to spend on eBay, I bought a 2009 Philadelphia Adrian Peterson National Chilcle Mini auto that should be numbered to five and a few Percy Harvin cards I liked. The card I bought is a redemption, but after seeing that he had signed all of his Black cards, I thought there may be a chance that the card would be in stock. Luckily, I was right, and the card should be shipped soon.

So, for my 500 bucks, I ended up with 2 Harvin autos, 3 boxes, and a ridiculously great looking and low numbered Peterson auto. Too bad I couldnt get the SPA, but she will be mine. Oh yes... She will be mine.

Thanks to Rob from VOTC

We all know all about the exploits from the National that Rob told us about on his site, but I wanted to give him a special thanks for the hook up. Rob was nice enough to send me the Adrian Peterson national exclusive that he managed to pick up over at UD's booth, and I think that is worthy of a plug here.

Be sure to go explore his blog, you wont be disappointed. He also had his one year anniversary, glad to see the card blogger network passing those milestones.

High End From The Horse's Mouth

Every time a super high end product comes out, many of the blogs tend to focus on how terrible it is solely because of the cost. Not because of design, not because of content, but because of how much you spend for the amount you get. The problem is, many of the bloggers are one sport baseball collectors, who have grown up collecting cards in a vastly different fashion. So, rather than hear about the evils of high end from people who dont really collect it, I think its time to see some different opinions from someone who is a part of this hobby because of how great it is.

A common sentiment is that high end is killing the hobby. Why? I dont see how offering a product for a HUGE part of the collecting base is bad. Does it create a situation that puts a burden on other collectors? No, Base Topps is still around, Ginter is as popular as ever, and the Heritage products have not been axed from any calendar. In fact, more and more low end products, especially in baseball, are being added to the releases for the year. So, if that is the case, what difference does it make? Why not give everyone what they want when you have the ability to do so?

To that, most people say that kids are being driven away by the pricing structure of the industry. Why is that such a big deal? Kids didnt drive the collecting boom of the 90s, adults did. Kids dont drive current revenue for the industry, adults do. Why arent we focusing on adding more people who have disposable income to the demographic? The kid friendly rallying cry makes no sense, because kids dont produce the revenue any more. There are too many other sources of entertainment that are becoming more readily available, and non-interactive mediums are falling by the wayside. The card industry will never be able to compete with video games or the internet, and when the landscape is dominated by adults, kids find other ways to get involved in products and businesses they can access in a more widely supported industry.

Now, a lot of people seem to think that subtracting products and adding extreme low end products for kids will solve a lot of problems. I cant tell you how frustrating that way of thinking is. So, you would rather take away the products that thousands love for a demographic that is non-existant? What business would do that? Also, this industry thrives of the value of its products, and a extreme low end product would hold no value. Do you think kids are that stupid? No, they would still buy all the products they buy right now, only then, they would have less of them to buy. Great.

High end products provide access to wonderful looking cards with autographs and jerseys that appeal to even the most casual of sports fans. Autographs are worldwide collection pieces that span more than sports, and people find prestige in having them. That means when you offer amazingly designed pieces that are accessible to many adults who want autographs of their favorite sports players, you draw people into your demographic. Thats why adults populate the collecting pool, and why the industry has changed to cater to them, not people who collect sets.

Plus, when you bring adults into the market, you also have direct marketing access to their kids. The best advertisement for a product is word of mouth, and when kids have parents who are hardcore collectors, they are much more likely to stumble upon the hobby, or have it bred into their early life. Considering that many parents will collect the autograph part of the hobby, the kids will too. Autograph cards are also more valuable, especially from high cost products, meaning that kids will want those more. Thanks to parents who are collectors, they can have them.

Lastly, a lot of people seem to think that high end is a rip off. When you buy a product that costs six hundred, and only get five cards, they think its the worst thing in the world. Well, in terms of quantity over quality, that is definitely true. However, most of the time, the quality is so high, that a price tag of 600 seems reasonable to the people that can afford it. Mario may tell you what you can buy for the price of a box, but the reality is that those things arent of interest to people with massive amounts of disposable income. Yes, there may be people who buy and cannot afford it, its not the fault of the manufacturer that these people make poor decisions.

Does this justify someone being disappointed when they dont get back their money? Yes, because anyone who has spent their money on any chance will tell you that human emotions dictate their response, not the price of the item they bought. Just like when you buy a 50 dollar product and get nothing, the feelings are similar when you buy a 500 dollar product. Disappointment in your pulls comes with the wax busting territory. The tangent to this feeling is that the experience of the thrill is what drives many people in all gambling industries, just like with cards. People need to understand that the only sure thing in busting wax is that you are going to end up with some cards, not that you are going to end up with your money back. If you are looking to make money on a break, regardless of price, you are going at your investments the wrong way.

Bottom line is this, you dont have to buy any product you dont want to, but its unfair to address the merits of a product just because it costs more than you personally are willing to spend. Feel free to comment on design, player content or whatever, but cost should not damn a product. The fact of the matter is that there are many people who love spending their money on high end stuff, and many of them dont shit on the way low enders function anywhere close to the way certain people act with unwarranted disdain for the high enders. If you dont like high end, thats fine, but dont use unrelated and outdated reasons to justify your points. At least frame your argument in the correct reference range, while not exploiting paradigms that havent been true for 20 years.

A Comment On Exclusive NCAA Licensing

Im so glad this industry has turned out to be eye for an eye type of crap, right? Well, Topps signed an exclusive deal with MLB for their license, so UD signed an exclusive deal with the NCAA licensing people. Upper Deck sues topps, Topps sues Upper Deck. Its all about who can kick the other's nuts the hardest, and personally, its gotten to the point of absurdity. Although the MLB license was huge in baseball, the collegiate license is huge in just about every other sport. It basically puts Press Poop out on their ass, and prevents Panini, Topps, SAGE and everyone else from making logo ridden college cards. This will basically damage pre-premiere releases for all those companies, no doubt, and I don’t think that is very good at all.

I will continue to post my repeated feelings on contracts as long as shit like this goes down. Exclusivity sucks, bottom line, because it basically puts you ahead of the competition by force rather than by content. Really, as much I as I have despised the absolute donkey crap that Panini has put out, I would at least like them to get the chance to redeem themselves next year. Granted, it is only 5 of the 16 sets of the year, but that is 5 I would like to see at top form for everyone - not just one company. Exlusivity hurts collectors because it takes away the choices we have, both for baseball, basketball and also for football. Now that I will not be able to get the college uni cards that look like the college unis, I will DEFINITELY avoid those products even more so than I already do. I really dislike cards without the pro shit on them, but I still have some singles from the targets I collect. No more, for sure, if I have to deal with logoless cards. What's the point anymore if it gets that far?

Really, this is only a bad thing, just as it was in Baseball with Topps, and the pettiness of the contract is dripping from the pages. We get it, the first strike is always the worst, as it was here too, but this is not faring much better for anyone.

I swear, if an NFL exlusive is reached, regardless of company, I will never forgive the NFL and NFLPA for allowing it to happen on their watch. Thankfully, with Panini GROSSLY overspending on the NBA license, and Topps doing the same on the baseball, im not holding my breath. Yet, only time will tell. Let the pandering begin.

UD Blog: 1998 Vikings Revisted

Last week, I had an epiphany about my experience during the 1998 season in Minnesota when cleaning out my DVR. After watching a documentary on the exploits of the team, I sat down and wrote for a few hours about my experience being at all the games. Im really pleased with the outcome, hopefully you guys are too.

Check it out here.

NOTE: Yes, I know the Vikings suck. Its part of being a Minnesota sports fan, and I thrive on the disappointment.

REMINDER: SCU Fantasy Football League Draft is Coming Up

For all the people who put down their deposits on SCU fantasy football, the draft is coming up in a few weeks. Check your league page and put it on your calendar. If you cant make it, make sure to pre-rank your players so you dont get stuck with hurt or retired players you dont want.

Im still working on a prize for the winner, but I may just go for a trophy or a box of cards. If you are participating, let me know if you are cool with the deposit money going towards a box of SPA or something for the winner.

Thanks!

The "No Fakes" Club Grows Larger...

Every once in a while, someone comes up with a great idea that can help everyone. The guys over at hobbykings.com have definitely put something like that together with their site dedicated to posting cards from 2008-09 Exquisite Basketball. The forums over at hobby kings has long been a hotbed of discussion regarding all things exquisite basketball, so its no surprise they put this together.

Each time a new card is posted on eBay, one of the people signed on to help will post the card on the site. This means that there will be a record of how the card FIRST appeared, with the intention of having proof against fakes in the future.

Considering that the new Exquisite Basketball has some of the most ridiculous patches you could ever set eyes on, this is a great idea. Obviously they cant get everything, but they can definitely make a difference. They have my kudos, no doubt.

I Have A Question About UD Black

So, UD posted a bunch of non mock-ups from black, the first anticipated high end product of the year. As you can see, there is one major problem with these cards of the 2009 rookies.

Yes, they are all STILL in college uniforms. Now, I can imagine that there are a few reasons why this may be the case, and for their sake, I hope its one of them. First, is that these cards could have all been signed at the rookie premiere, which means that pro uniforms could not be possible - something that could have been avoided with a later release date. Second is that in order for the cards to be signed in time, they needed to have the cards out to the rookies as soon as possible. Again, a circumstance that could be fixed with a later release date.

Dont get me wrong, the cards look BEYOND awesome, but the college unis really dont sit anywhere close to right with me. At least the other stuff from the veteran stars looks fucking great enough to make me forget about some of my anger. I will definitely be chasing after a few AD cards from this set, though I will avoid the Harvin cards if its still Florida Gators stuff all the way. I guess college uniform pictures are a trade off at this point in the year for on card sigs, but I cant help but feel that this was a little rushed if it could have been done right later on. We easily could have waited.

Cool Video From Upper Deck Authenticated

Makes me want to go buy some Tiger stuff. I said back a few months ago that Tiger should be the one autograph that most of us should be chasing, and its cool to get some insights into the pictures he signs so much.

Here's to hoping we get a few more vids like this.
